Box Score In a battle between local rivals, #10 Cal State San Marcos and #25 Point Loma Nazarene played to a scoreless tie in San Diego on Thursday.
Both teams remain undefeated on the season, though both failed to win for the first time. CSUSM is now 4-0-1 and Point Loma is 5-0-1.
As these games tend to be, it was a physical, hard-fought, defense-oriented match between two disciplined teams. A tentative first half saw the teams combine to take 4 total shots – all of which came from CSUSM – and put none on frame.
The second half opened up a bit, with San Marcos taking 6 shots and Point Loma taking 3. In overtime, Point Loma held a 3-1 shots advantage.
CSUSM's All-American goalkeeper Kaycee Gunion was called on to make 3 saves in what was her busiest game of the season thus far. The San Marcos defense, which was thought to be somewhat of a question mark entering the season, has not conceded a goal in any of the team's five matches so far – a streak that encompasses 470 minutes of play.
Arielle Cohen and Shelby Bush took two shots and put one on net each. Chelsea Porter, Shannon Cox, Lauren Misklevitz, Amy Alber, and Erin Mulrooney played the full 110 minutes in very hot conditions.
Cougar women's soccer will be on the road on Saturday against Whittier, then back at home on Sunday to host University of Texas-Brownsville at 4:00 PM.
