Box Score With each shutout this season, October 17, 2010 is becoming a more significant day for Cal State San Marcos women's soccer.
Why? That was the date of last year's game against U.C. Santa Cruz, or the last time CSUSM allowed a goal.
The Cougars kept the shutout streak alive on Saturday at Whittier College with a comfortable 3-0 win, improving to 5-0-1 in 2011. It's the team's eighth consecutive shutout overall.
Whittier drops to 0-3 on the season.
All-Conference forward Shelby Bush tallied two unassisted goals to key the victory. Kelly Skvarna added one of her own from a Sasha Hudson pass.
CSUSM controlled the game for all 90 minutes, out-shooting Whittier 14-4 and putting 9 shots on net. The Cougars held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks as well.
All-American keeper Kaycee Gunion saved all 3 shots that came her way to pick up her sixth shutout in as many games this year.
For Head Coach Ron Pulvers, the shutout streak is a total team effort.
“Kaycee obviously deserves a lot of credit, but our back four of Erin, Chelsea, Shannon, and Amy have quickly developed a lot of chemistry,” noted Pulvers. “We're a hard team to score a goal on.”
Of those back four, Chelsea Porter, Shannon Cox, and Amy Alber are all new starters. Erin Mulrooney is the only returner.
The Cougars will be back home tomorrow and will face a tough test against the University of Texas at Brownsville. The match starts at 4:00 PM on Mangrum Field.
