Box Score #15-ranked Cal State San Marcos women's soccer remained perfect on the young season on Tuesday, going on the road to defeat Biola University 1-0.
CSUSM improves to 2-0 on the year. Biola drops to 0-2.
The Cougars held a clear advantage on the statsheet, out-shooting Biola 14-8 and holding an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. Keeper Kaycee Gunion was called on to make 5 saves to preserve the shutout, her second in as many games this year.
Though senior forward Lauren Johnson was held without a shot, fellow attacker Shelby Bush led all players with 5.
But it was rock-solid midfielder Arielle Cohen who provided the difference-maker. With the game scoreless through the first half, Cohen stepped up to a free kick in the 55th minute. Standing just outside the box, Cohen found the back of the net to score what would end up being the game's only goal.
The Cougar defense kept its season-long clean sheet alive, and as usual thrived on physical play. In 2010, CSUSM went 10-1-4 when committing more fouls than its opponents. On Tuesday, the Cougars out-fouled the Eagles 12-3.
CSUSM will be back in action at Fresno Pacific on Friday, before coming home to play the University of La Verne on Sunday.
