The Cal State San Marcos Men's Basketball team got off to a great start at the Las Vegas Classic, winning their opener against the Lethbridge Pronghorns 75-50 Wednesday night.
Jim Saia's squad came out sharp despite traveling from Provo, Utah earlier in the day after last night's game against BYU.
The game was tied 18-18 with 8:25 left in the first half when the Cougars went on a 19-2 run capped off by a AJ Chamberlain fast break layup that left the score at 37-20. The Cougars led at halftime by 10, and continued to roll in the second half, outscoring the Pronghorns 34-19 the rest of the way.
Chamberlain scored in double digits for his 8
th straight game, leading the Cougars with 23 points on 10 of 14 shooting. He also filled up the box score with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks.
Jacob Ranger added 18 points and 3 steals for CSUSM.
Much of the Cougars offense was generated by its strong defense, as the Cougars forced 20 turnovers and held a 31-9 edge in points off turnovers. The Cougars also had 51 of their 75 points in the paint.
CSUSM plays NAIA #2 Robert Morris (PA) tomorrow in what should be an excellent matchup. The Eagles recently defeated #1 Concordia (CA) in overtime, a team that the Cougars nearly upset three weeks ago before falling 92-88. CSUSM is now 7-7 on the season.
