Forty minutes isn't enough for the fans at Mira Costa gym in Oceanside. For the second straight night, the home crowd got to see extra time, as the Cal State San Marcos basketball team went back and forth with the visiting Montana Western Bulldogs on Tuesday night. This time, the Cougars sealed the deal, beating a very good Bulldog team 60-56.
Coming off a tough overtime loss last night where the Cougars gave up 94 points, CSUSM was energized by the debut of guard
Bryan Emanuel, whose defensive presence was felt immediately. The Cougars held Montana Western to just 34.9% shooting on the night, and had a hard time getting good shots off.
The Cougar's didn't shoot particularly well themselves, as the score was just 50-50 after regulation, but quality basketball was being played throughout. Each team scored the majority of their points in the paint, with CSUSM holding the edge 38-34 on the points down low.
The Cougars had a chance to win in regulation, but a
Tim Steed 3-pointer at the buzzer hit just enough of the rim to bounce out and send the game to overtime. The lead changed a couple of times early in overtime, but
Danny Redmon's skillful layup gave the Cougars a 1-point lead with just over a minute left, and
Tim Steed hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Aaron Chamberlain led the team in scoring with 16 points, and notched his fourth straight double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds.
Bryan Emanuel scored 14 points in his debut, adding 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
The Cougars move to 6-7 on the season, and Montana Western falls to 12-4. CSUSM plays next December 28
th against Lethbridge (Canada) as part of the Las Vegas Tournament.
