Men's Basketball loses heartbreaker to Arizona Christian

Leading by 16 at the half, the Cougars fall 94-89 in OT

Box Score
The Cal State Men's Basketball team shot the lights out Monday night. Unfortunately, despite a number of rim-rocking dunks and shooting almost 59% from the field, the Cougars were unable to come up with a win, falling 94-89 in overtime to the visiting Arizona Christian Firestorm.

The Cougars jumped on the Firestorm early, controlling the play for most of the first half and coasting to a 43-27 halftime lead. It is to Coach Rick Roth's and Arizona Christian's credit that their team didn't lay down and start thinking about tomorrow's game when the Cougars extended their lead to 23 at one point in the second half. CSUSM was leading by 20 with only 11 minutes to play when the Firestorm began their furious comeback, erasing it down to 2 points with 5:12 remaining after an incredible 21-3 run.

CSUSM appeared to regain its composure after the Firestorm run, pushing the lead back up to 7 with less than three minutes remaining, but the visitors refused to go down. Arizona Christian (2-10) had lost their 9 previous games, but used a barrage of 3-pointers and sharp free throw shooting to close the gap and complete the Tebow-like comeback.

The Firestorm never led in the second half, but tied the score at 80 with two free throws by Josh Cole. A missed last second 3-point attempt by Tim Steed sent the game into overtime.

Arizona Christian hit their first three shots in overtime, including two 3-pointers to jump to a quick 88-80 lead. CSUSM held tight and closed the gap, but the game was never in question after that. CSUSM falls to 5-7 now on the season.

Tim Steed had a brilliant day offensively, scoring 25 points and dishing out 8 assists. Jacob Ranger had 23 points and 7 rebounds, and AJ Chamberlain put up a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cougars will look to avenge the loss Tuesday night against Montana Western (11-3), who defeated Pacific Union at Mira Costa College 78-65 earlier in the evening.
