Continuing what has been a very tough early season schedule, Cal State San Marcos men's basketball traveled to #15-ranked Biola University Wednesday night, losing to the Eagles 66-56.
The Cougars, who were coming off a win over #2-ranked Mountain State (WV), are now 2-2 in their inaugural season. Biola improves to 4-1.
CSUSM started the game strong and played an excellent first half, particularly on the defensive end. Biola held a small lead for most of the half before the Cougars went on a 5-0 mini-run with about 6 minutes left, going up 23-17. CSUSM would lead by one at halftime.
But the second half belonged to the Eagles, who cut down on turnovers and hit shots to outscore CSUSM 40-27 in the game's final 20 minutes. Free throws played a big role, with Biola getting to the line 13 times and sinking 11 of them, while the Cougars connected on just 5 of 9 in the second half and shot just 56.3% from the line for the game.
Tim Steed and
Jacob Ranger both scored 17 points for the Cougars in the loss, though Steed was held to just 3 in the second half. CSUSM was out-rebounded 43-29 for the game, as the Cougars' forwards struggled against Biola's size up front.
CSUSM will face another tough foe on Saturday, as the Cougars will travel to Cal Baptist.
