Women’s Soccer Loses 1-0 to Westminster

Cougars control possession but can't finish chances in regular season finale.

Box Score

An afternoon that started with a celebration of the team's six seniors ended on a sour note, as #9-ranked Cal State San Marcos women's soccer lost its regular season finale at home to Westminster College, 1-0.

CSUSM closes out its regular season with a 13-3-1 record.  Westminster improves to 10-6-1.

When the Cougars struggle, they struggle in a very specific way.  CSUSM can hold a decisive possession advantage against all but a handful of teams in the NAIA even on an off day; and indeed, the Cougars out-shot Westminster 16-3 and held a 7-0 corner kick advantage.  No, when CSUSM is struggling, the team fails to generate scoring chances to reflect that possession, and fails to convert those chances when they do arrive.

That was the case on Friday, as the Cougars let dangerous scoring chances slip away throughout the first half and early in the second half.  Westminster, on the other hand, took full advantage of one of its rare chances in the early game.  In the 20th minute, Margo Hickman struck an absolutely perfectly-place shot from about 25 yards out on the flank, just over the outstretched fingers of Cougar keeper Kaycee Gunion.

The goal would hold up for the remainder of the 90 minutes, sending CSUSM home disappointed on senior day.  The team celebrated the contributions of seniors Gunion, Lauren Misklevitz, Chelsea Porter, Arielle Cohen, Lauren Johnson, and Shannon Cox.

Despite the loss, CSUSM will still be the top seed at the A.I.I. Conference Tournament in Georgia in two weeks, where the Cougars will look to compete for a conference title and a bid to Nationals.
