Box Score A cold, rainy day at Mission Bay High School made it difficult for the Cougars to continue their 3 game unbeaten streak as they fell to Patten 12-0 on Friday.
The loss puts CSUSM at 2-1-1, while Patten improves to 1-3 on the young season.
Patten managed to strike early against a Cougar team that had only yielded 6 runs in its first three games by scoring twice in the 1st inning. With the bases loaded, pitcher Richard Martin was able to get his team out of a jam by inducing a ground ball to the shortstop, to end the damage at just 2 runs.
After the first inning, the game became a pitching duel until the ladder part of the game. Patten starting pitcher, Phillip Gonzalez, pitched 7 strong innings as he managed to give up no runs despite walking 6 hitters.
In the end, a combination of great pitching and timely hitting was too much for CSUSM, as they were defeated by Patten 12-0. Led by shortstop Luke Heil, who alone had 6 RBIs on 4 hits, Patten rolled to their first victory of the season.
The Cougars will look to bounce back on Saturday in a double header against Patten at Escondido High School.
