Women’s Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with 4-0 Win over Marymount

Box Score
Playing in their final regular season match of the season, Cougar women's soccer closed the campaign out in style in front of the home crowd with a 4-0 victory over Marymount.
CSUSM closes out the season 10-1-5, and can now begin preparation for the A.I.I. Conference Tournament. Marymount drops to 5-10.
After a frustrating first half that featured plenty of opportunities but no goals – bringing back memories of the team's mid-season swoon – CSUSM came out in the second half and quickly took care of business. For the game, the Cougars out-shot Marymount 35-5, holding a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 52nd minute, as Taylor Ziencina found Natalya Erbel alone in the box at point blank range, and Erbel finished the opportunity. Less than three minutes later, a scramble in front of the net ended when Taylor Schurman knocked home a rebound to make it 2-0.
CSUSM would continue to press, and in the 62nd minute, Lucia Asbury scored the team's third goal, kicking in a Schurman cross. Finally, in the 73rd minute Kristin Poggioli slipped Mary Green in behind the defense, and Green blasted a shot past the keeper to make it 4-0.
But the contest was really about CSUSM's senior. The class of Candace Queen, Breanna Brenton, Lucia Asbury, Taylor Ziencina, Taylor Schurman, Brittany Boyce, and Michele Ramirez were honored before the game, then again as the clock wound down, when all were taken off the field to big applause. This class of seniors has been key to the team winning two consecutive conference championships, and they'll look to make it a third in the coming weeks.
The full A.I.I. Conference Tournament schedule will be posted on www.csusmcougars.com when it is available.
