Women's Soccer Loses Overtime Heartbreaker to Point Loma

Box Score

The undefeated season for Cougar women's soccer came to an end on Wednesday, with Point Loma besting CSUSM in overtime, 2-1.

CSUSM is now 4-1-2 on the year; Point Loma is 5-1.

A tight, cleanly-played first half yielded few realistic scoring opportunities for either team. The teams proved as evenly-matched as their records, with neither taking clear control of the game. Both sides had opportunities for free kicks deep in the offensive zone, but neither could connect.

That changed early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Point Loma's Katie Pedlowe hit a ball into the box, and the usually-solid Cougar defense butchered the clear, allowing Kari Moore to knock home the game's first goal.

The goal ended CSUSM's shutout streak at 632 minutes, and was the first freshman keeper Kaycee Gunion allowed in Cougar blue.

With the Cougar women behind for the first time all season, the question was how they'd respond. That was answered rather quickly. Defender Michele Ramirez played forward Katelyn Krauss behind the defense in the very next minute, and Krauss hit a beautiful chip shot over the keeper and into the back of the net.

The 1-1 tie would persist through regulation and into overtime. Eight minutes into the extra period, Point Loma threatened on a counter attack, and Gunion made a stop outside the box, resulting in a yellow card and a free kick from about 18 yards out. Rebecca Lewis drilled a perfectly-placed shot into the corner, sending CSUSM home with its first loss of the season.

The Cougar will look to bounce back this Sunday when they host Westminster.
