Box Score Cougar women's soccer continued its unbeaten season on Saturday, cruising to a 2-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan in front of a crowd of nearly 500 at Mangrum Track & Soccer Field.
CSUSM is now 4-0-2 on the season.
The first half was controlled by the Cougars, with Kansas Wesleyan unable to generate any real chances against CSUSM's airtight defense. On the other side of the field, CSUSM put together a couple good runs, and in the 14th minute connected on one. Co-captain Courtney Drummond slipped by the KWU defense, and was taken down in the box. The resulting penalty kick was expertly finished by Taylor Ziencina, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
The second half brought more of the same. CSUSM continued to control the flow of the game, adding an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Kelly Wherry smoothly played a ball through the defense, finding Courtney Drummond. Facing the keeper one-on-one, Drummond slid a shot under her that found the back of the net. The 2-0 lead would hold, giving the Cougar women their sixth shutout in as many games.
“We still need to work on finishing our chances,” commented Head Coach Ron Pulvers. “But the result was good.”
CSUSM has now played, incredibly, 580 minutes of shutout soccer this season.
CSUSM will host Point Loma on Wednesday.
