Box Score

The #9 ranked Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team was stunned at home on Sunday, losing 1-0 to La Sierra.

CSUSM is now 6-2-2 on the year.

Throughout this season, the Cougars' only real bugaboo has been finishing chances.  They've been able to hide this by controlling play with superior talent and athleticism, while playing airtight and super-disciplined defense.  By holding opponents scoreless and continuously attacking, they eventually knock in one or two scrappy goals to get victories.  This formula has worked all season, and is why CSUSM has a top-10 ranking.

On Sunday, the formula did not work.  While CSUSM was able to control play, out-shooting La Sierra 20 to 4, the goal simply never came, and the team's trademark defense had one hiccup that ended up costing them.  In the 63rd minute, La Sierra's Kristen Kirsch corralled a loose ball in the box, and hit a shot past keeper Kaycee Gunion.  A Cougar defender guarding the goal line was able to seemingly block the shot, but was not able to keep the ball from trickling over the line.

That would be all La Sierra needed, as their keeper Jocelyn Bennett held strong, and the Cougars continued to squander chance after chance until the final whistle.  La Sierra improves to 4-5 on the year with the win.

The squad will look to rebound on Tuesday when they host Chapman.
