Greg Hutton has served as the CSUSM men’s head coach since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s golf head coach in the summer of 2014.
A nine-time CCAA Coach of the Year (8 women, 1 men), Hutton has guided the women's team to seven conference championships and the men's team to one.
Hutton has led the teams to 72 tournament wins (47 women, 25 men) over the course of his time at San Marcos. CSUSM's women's team has also been ranked by WGCA Coaches Assocation in the top 10 nationally each of the past seven seasons, reaching as high as No. 3 in the country in 2019-20 season.
Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason in 2017-18, the women's team has qualified every year for regionals (2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026) and has made four national championship appearances (2019, 2023, 2024, 2025). The men's team has made six South Central / West Regional appearances (2018, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026) and one team appearance at the national championships (2026).

The NAIA YEARS
During the NAIA years, Hutton’s CSUSM squads won 13 tournament championships and his players have earned seven NAIA All-America selections. He’s been named West Region Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) twice (2013, 2015), and 13 men’s players have been named GCAA All-West Region.
Hutton guided the men’s team to a pair of Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championships (2013, 2015) and mentored the first-ever individual conference medalists at CSUSM, Dylan Healey and Vanessa Chap.
The 2014-15 season was the first one where he took the reigns of both squads. He had four players – two women and two men – named to All-America teams and he combined to win four competitions between the teams. The Cougar men won the A.I.I. Conference title for the second time, posted the lowest scoring average (293.03) in program history and had two players named NAIA All-America. CSUSM was in the final group of the NAIA National Championship before finishing seventh.
The 2014-15 women’s team won the Embry-Riddle Fall Invite and placed in the top-three in three others. The team finished runner-up in the A.I.I. Championship and had two players named NAIA All-America. It was the first time the women’s team had a NAIA All-American since the 2008-09 campaign.
The 2013-14 men’s squad won three tournaments and went on to take 19th at the NAIA National Championships. Three players were named GCAA All-West Region.
In his third season as head men's golf coach in 2012-13, Hutton led the Cougars to their first-ever Association Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championship, a third-place finish at the NAIA National Championships, and (at the time) the lowest scoring average in program history. In addition, CSUSM had three players named NAIA All-America; it was the first time a CSUSM player had been named All-America since 2007-08.
After the team's strong campaign, Hutton was named GCAA West Region Coach of the Year for the first time.
In 2011-12, the Cougars started the year off with a bang, taking home the California State Intercollegiate (Sept. 25-27, 2011) before winning the CSUSM Fall Invite (Nov. 7-8, 2011). The Cougars added a victory at the SMEE Builders Invitational (Mar. 4-6, 2013) and finished runners-up at the A.I.I. Conference Championships. After a year out of the national tournament, the Cougars earned an at-large berth to the NAIA National Championships, where they missed the cut by a single stroke.
During his first season of 2010-11, Hutton led the Cougars to three top-three finishes and a third-place finish in the A.I.I. Conference Championships.
From 2006-10, Hutton served as the head coach at Holy Names University in Oakland, Calif., transforming the small, private school into a national championship contender in the NAIA. In 2009-10, HNU won eight of its 15 events, including the Cal Pac Conference Championship, en route to finishing fifth at Nationals. Hutton's squad produced five All-Conference selections, the Conference Player of the Year and two All-Americans.
In 2006, Hutton led the team to a California Pacific Conference Championship in his first season as coach. The following season the squad finished second in the conference, and in 2008 Hutton led Holy Names to a 10th place finish at the National Championships and a No. 12 national ranking.
