David Nathanson was named Cal State San Marcos Assistant Director of Athletics, ACES (Academics, Compliance, Eligibility and Student Services) in August 2017.
As the Assistant Director of Athletics for ACES, Nathanson oversees the eligibility certification process in conjunction with the Registrar’s Office, the monitoring of NCAA initial and continuing eligibility and oversees the administration of all athletic scholarships and CSUSM Athletics’ National Letter of Intent program. Nathanson continues to help oversee the Health and Wellness programming for all student-athletes. In addition, he oversees the admissions process for all student-athletes as well as housing and orientation. He has continued to serve on a variety of campus committees including the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD) committee and the University Hazing Education Team.
He previously held the position of Student-Athlete Support Services Coordinator beginning in January 2015.
In the role of the Student-Athlete Support Services Coordinator (SASSC), Nathanson oversaw the student-athlete’s academic and personal growth and success. Nathanson managed the mentoring program and the Cougar P.R.I.D.E. program while also serving as a liaison with the Dean of Students Office, Disabled Students Service, Student Health and Counseling Services, and the Career Center helps ensure that CSUSM student-athletes get the academic and personal support they need to succeed in all facets. The purpose of the SASSC position is to evaluate student-athletes’ needs and then help ensure that they are then being met. The SASSC also serves as the SAAC advisor and helps evaluate student-athletes for NCAA continuing eligibility.
He was appointed to the role after serving as the Coordinator of NCAA Transition Requirements in September 2014. He coordinated all aspects of the NCAA transition, including the NCAA's visits to campus. In addition, he evaluated department policies and procedures to ensure that CSUSM was in compliance with NCAA Division II policies.
Nathanson came to CSUSM after a year as Director of Academic Enrichment Program/Compliance Intern for Cal State San Bernardino. At CSUSB, he oversaw supervised the study hall program for all student-athletes, created study plans and enrichment goals and assisted in coordinating student-athlete development activities.
Nathanson earned a B.A. in History from the University of Oklahoma in 2006, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After working as a Family Intervention Specialist between 2006-09, Nathanson earned his Juris Doctor Degree from the Indiana Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, Indiana in 2012.
Nathanson currently lives in Temecula with his wife, Jennifer. He is a lifelong, diehard Miami Dolphins fan who loves French Bulldogs and collecting LEGOs.
