Terry Ryan joined CSUSM as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the men's basketball program in September 2021. Ryan brings a wealth of basketball experience and expertise to the Cougars.
Most recently, Terry served for seven years as an assistant coach at UC San Diego. He helped the Tritons achieve winning records in all seven seasons, including the 2019-20 season when the Tritons finished 30-1 and ranked fourth in the nation. He also helped the Tritons win four CCAA tournament championships in a row from 2017 to 2020.
Terry mentored and coached several All-League players, including Adam Klie (UCSD’s all-time leading scorer), Mikey Howell (UCSD’s all-time assist leader) and Tyrell Roberts (CCAA 2020 Player of the Year). Seven of his players earned contracts to play professional basketball in other countries.
Before coming to California, Terry coached three different junior college teams to top-10 national finishes, including two NJCAA Final Four appearances. After relocating to San Diego, he coached Division I basketball alongside Brad Holland at the University of San Diego.
Terry has also mentored and coached younger players at all levels of basketball. He worked alongside legendary coach John Olive at Torrey Pines High School. As a head coach at Canyon Crest Academy, Terry won a CIF high school championship.
Terry brings to CSUSM a wealth of basketball knowledge and a tremendous love of the game. He is known by his colleagues and athletes as a great team defensive coach and an outstanding individual offensive coach.
Terry received his Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and his MBA from Marymount University. Terry and his wife, Megan, have one son and three daughters and reside in Carmel Valley.
