Mentoring & Tutoring

Mentoring

Mentoring is designed to assist first-year and students who need additional support with balancing their semester academically and

athletically. Mentoring includes organizing their notebook(s) and prioritizing important deadlines while also cultivating and developing

numerous academic skills. Mentors can offer direction to appropriate campus support services and provide an opportunity for students to

discuss challenges, express concerns and frustrations, or seek input on the best course of action. The Student-Athlete Support Services

Coordinator (SASSC) oversees this program.

Mentoring (either individual or group) is required for all new freshmen student-athletes to CSUSM and any continuing student-athlete who is

ineligible or is deemed to be "at-risk." High school GPA or transfer GPA, ACT/SAT scores, and the academic strengths survey are all used to

determine who will participate in the program. The mentoring program is always available to student-athletes who would like to participate.

Appointments will be scheduled during the first week of each semester. Contracts will be signed that explain the policies and procedures for

this program. It is important that all student-athletes keep their scheduled appointments. If an emergency arises, please contact the head

coach, a sports medicine staff member, or the as soon as possible. We ask that mentoring be treated the same as scheduled practice sessions.

Each student-athlete will be given a mentoring contract during the first week of classes each semester. A signed mentoring contract must be

submitted to the mentor by the second week of classes. As outlined in the contract, there is a no-show policy in place.

First No-Show:The first no-show will result in a written warning.
Second No-Show:A second no-show will result in a meeting with the student-athlete, mentor, SASSC, and the head coach.
Third No-Show: A third no-show will result in one game suspension (if competing) or a one-week suspension from practice (if redshirting or ineligible), and another meeting will be scheduled with the mentor, head coach, and the SASSC.
Fourth No-Show: If a 4thno-show occurs, a student-athlete will be immediately suspended from the mentoring program, and a meeting will be scheduled with the mentor, SASSC, head coach, and the Associate Director of Athletics, at which time conduct sanctions will be discussed and applied.

Each head coach will receive a copy of the mentoring contract and semester goals for their student-athletes.

Mentors will keep the mentoring contract and maintain all related documents in a confidential file located in the office of the SASSC.
