developed to provide education and experience in Sports Medicine, promote healthy living, and prepare the student to enter into the healthcare industry.
The CSUSM Sports Medicine Internship Program has a strong and consistent history of providing ethical, high quality and progressive health care and prevention to its intercollegiate athletes. CSUSM is providing you with the opportunity to "learn by doing" and observing the skills of a Certified Athletic Trainer. The Sports Medicine Intern must demonstrate a level of professionalism that includes self-discipline and motivation to develop knowledge, skills, and experiences. To be successful the intern must demonstrate dependability, maturity, enthusiasm, organization and have common sense.
What is a Certified Athletic Trainer?
Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, management, intervention and rehabilitation of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. It also includes the education and counseling of athletes, parents and coaches about athletic injuries, along with administration and organization of athletic medicine programs. Please visit

How do I become a Certified Athletic Trainer?
Students who want to become a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) must earn a degree from an accredited athletic training program to be eligible to take and pass a national exam in order to become an ATC. Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention, first aid and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition.

Can I apply to the internship if I attend another college?
No, students who attend other colleges may not apply to the internship program.
When can I apply to the Sports Medicine Internship Program?
The Sports Medicine Internship is available ONLY to students who currently attend CSUSM. Applications are accepted throughout the year, however a 1 year minimum commitment is required.”
What is the time commitment expected in this Sports Medicine Internship program?
In order to be successful in this program as a Sports Medicine Intern, a consistent time commitment will be expected from the applicant. Therefore, (if you are a CSUSM student) it is expected that your commitment be for a minimum of 1 year, 10-15 hours weekly at minimum for an Intern. Students are always welcome to commit to the internship for a longer period of time.
What does the CSUSM Sports Medicine Program offer to its Interns?
As a Sports Medicine Intern you will have the opportunity to acquire clinical experience in a medical environment at the Division II level. You will be able to observe how the Sports Medicine Clinic functions and how the Athletic Training medical staff, Athletic Training Students, including physicians work together to bring the best medical care possible to our athletes. The intern will be able to participate and have 'hands on' experience in providing health care to our intercollegiate athletes. Under the direct supervision of the CSUSM sports medicine staff, the intern will acquire the skills and education necessary to succeed in the medical profession. The educational component consists of attending educational in-services, observing surgeries, giving presentations, research assignments, and other tasks assigned by the staff. Interns will also have responsibilities in assisting with the daily operations of our Sports Medicine Clinic and assist in medical coverage of practices or games.

- Have a current certification in Professional Rescuer CPR & First Aid.
- Submit academic transcripts
- Complete a class/activity schedule form (click here), blocking off times for classes and other commitments. Please specify classes and activities.

An interview with the Sports Medicine staff may be requested at a later date if your application has been approved.
