CSUSM Emergency Action Plan (Off Campus)


Home Games and/or Practices

1) If the Athletic Trainer is not present at the practice or game the head coach will be responsible for providing initial care for injured athletes.

2) Dial 9-1-1 from the nearest hard line or cell phone and follow these steps
  • Identify yourself
  • Give them the location of the emergency
    • Corky's Gym: 274 Pico Ave San Marcos, 92069
    • Pacific Ridge School: 6269 El Fuerte Street Carlsbad, CA 92009
    • Mira Costa College: 1 Barnard Dr, Oceanside, CA 92056
  • Nature of emergency
  • Number of athletes involved, condition of athletes
  • First aid treatment initiated by first responder
  • Directions to the location
  • Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to.

3) While the ambulance is being summoned make sure that the emergency access route is cleared from equipment, carts, cars, people, etc.. (if possible have someone meet the Responding unit(s) and guide them to the incident area)

In the event of a Cardiopulmonary Emergency obtain the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) from the Athletic Training cart or send someone to the Clarke Field House front desk to retrieve the unit located in the first cubicle.
  • Verify that the patient is in cardiac arrest (unconscious, no respiration, no pulse)
  • Press ON/OFF to turn on the AED (the green light will light). The connect electrodes message and voice prompt will occur until the patient is connected to the AED.
  • Prepare the patient for electrode placement.
  • Follow the screen messages and voice prompts provided by the AED




Away Games


1)If the Host Athletic Trainer is not at the game the head coach will be responsible for providing initial care for injured athletes
2) Send an assistant coach or athlete to find the Host Athletic Trainer
3) Dial 9-1-1 from the nearest hard line or cell phone and follow these steps
  • Identify yourself
  • Give location of the incident (City, University, and Venue)
  • Number of athlete's involved, condition of athlete's
  • First aid treatment initiated by first responder
  • Directions to the location
  • Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to.


4) Once the Host Athletic Trainer arrives let them take charge of the situation and assist them as needed
5) Have athletes insurance information and emergency contact information ready for EMS
6) Notify athlete's emergency contact.
7) Contact Paul Signorelli 619-840-4742 as soon as possible.
