No. 2-Seed Ashford Captures A.I.I. Title
SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Second-seeded Ashford upset top-seeded Cal State San Marcos 1-0 to capture the 2012 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference championship on Saturday at CSUSM Multipurpose Field.
Holly Babut broke a 0-0 stalemate in the 82nd minute with a high-arching shot into the top of the net from 25 yards. Jessica VanDyke made six saves for the Saints while keeping the Cougars out of the net.
CSUSM outshot AU 11-6 and put seven shots on-frame compared with two for the Saints.
Ashford (13-4-2) will receive an automatic berth to the NAIA national tournament, while CSUSM (11-5-3) will await its fate.
