HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions jumped out to an immediate advantage in the top of the first inning. Briana Neal opened the scoring with a solo home run to left center. After Alexis Barber reached on a fielding error and advanced into scoring position, Abigail Hynes delivered an RBI single up the middle to plate Barber. Later in the inning, Madisen Antioco lined an RBI single to right field, allowing Hynes to score and extend the lead to 3-0.
- The Cougars responded in the bottom half of the opening frame when Jillian Albayati crushed a solo home run to left center, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
- CSUSM continued to chip away in the third inning as Albayati launched her second solo home run of the game, again to left center, trimming the gap to one run at 3-2.
- The momentum carried into the fourth inning when Madilyn Novello reached on a single and was replaced by pinch runner Jordan Munn. Following a sacrifice bunt by Alizabeth Ruiz and a flyout that advanced Munn to third, Munn came home on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.
- The game then settled into a tense battle through the middle innings, with both teams trading defensive stops. CSUSM threatened in the seventh inning with Jordan Elias and Marissa Morales both reaching base, but Saint Leo turned a key double play to erase the opportunity and keep the score even.
- Saint Leo regained control in the top of the eighth inning. Abigail Hynes led off with a double to right center and was replaced by pinch runner Tegan Larrimore. A sacrifice bunt, paired with a defensive error, moved runners into scoring position before Izzy LaRoche brought home the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice. Moments later, aggressive baserunning paid off as Grace Dunsworth executed a steal of home, extending the Lions' lead to 5-3.
- CSUSM attempted to answer in the bottom of the eighth when Czar Fleischman singled up the middle with two outs, but the Lions held firm defensively to secure the victory.
