CSUSM Powers Past CSUMB with 16 Hits in 14-4 Win at West Regionals

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Earning a dominant win in the NCAA Division II West Regional, the No. 1-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team (52-8) defeated No. 5-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay (33-23) by a score of 14-4 in five innings on Friday at CSUSM Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cal State Monterey Bay struck first in the top of the first inning when Abreanna Alba drew a walk and Nani Arreola followed with a two-run home run to left field, giving the Otters an early 2-0 lead.
  • CSUSM responded in explosive fashion in the bottom half of the inning. Marissa Morales worked a leadoff walk before Jillian Albayati singled to put runners on the corners. Zoe Karam brought home the Cougars' first run with an RBI single through the left side. After a flyout, Czar Fleischman doubled to right field to score Albayati and tie the game. Madilyn Novello then reached on an error that allowed another run to score, giving CSUSM its first lead at 3-2. Olivia Rivera followed with an RBI single, and Alizabeth Ruiz added a two-run double to extend the margin. After additional walks loaded the bases, Rae D'Amato delivered an RBI single, and Morales capped the inning with a two-run single as CSUSM erupted for eight runs to take an 8-2 advantage.
  • The Otters answered in the top of the second inning as Ellie Escalante led off with a double before Gracie Strycula launched a two-run home run to center field, trimming the deficit to 8-4.
  • CSUSM added to its lead in the bottom of the second. Rivera singled and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Morales, making it 9-4.
  • After a scoreless third inning for both teams, the Cougars broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth. Rivera singled and Ruiz doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Jordan Elias drove in a run with a groundout before Ruiz later came home on a wild pitch. Following a walk and a single to reload the bases, Karam delivered the decisive blow with a three-run home run to left field, extending the lead to 14-4.
  • CSUMB was held scoreless over the final three innings as the Cougar pitching staff shut the door to secure the run-rule victory.

QUICK HITS
  • Hailey Shiftlett (8-1) earned the win in relief for CSUSM, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.
  • CSUMB starter Kadence Nulick (12-11) took the loss after surrendering five runs (three earned) on four hits in 0.2 innings.
  • CSUSM totaled 16 hits in the game, including six extra-base hits.
  • The Cougars scored in three different innings, highlighted by an eight-run first.
  • Karam recorded a game-high four RBIs, while Morales added three RBIs and reached base three times.
  • Karam raised her RBI season total to 74 RBIs, which puts her as CSUSM's new single-season RBI leader and one more than teammate Jillian Albayati.
