CSUSM Settles for 2-2 Draw Against No. 7 CSUSB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos men's soccer (1-3-3) earned an early advantage but settled for a 2-2 draw against undefeated No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino (5-0-2) on Thursday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On a free kick from Andrew Valencia 15 yards in front of the box, Valencia put a cross into the left side of the box, connecting with the head of Brando Oros, who put a hard shot into the right side of the goal from 10 yard out to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
  • After a CSUSM corner kick and battling for possession in the box, David Ruiz found the ball after a deflection and put a shot into the left side of the net from six yards out to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
  • Just two minutes later in the 55th minute, Anthony Morales put a cross into the box off a corner and found the head of Titus Alviso, who put a high shot into the center of the goal to cut the Coyotes' deficit to 2-1.
  • A long pass downfield into the box by CSUSB's Damian Gonzalez found Tony Negrete, who put a two-touch shot into the center of the net from the middle of the box to knot the game at 2-2.

  • CSUSM outshot CSUSB 18-13, including a 10-8 advantage in the second half.
  • Both teams put five shots on goal.
  • CSUSB had the edge in corner kicks at 6-5.
  • The Cougars controlled possession for 55% of the match.

  • This was the first draw in the all-time series' 14 matches between CSUSM and CSUSB.
  • The Cougars' last draw against a ranked opponent came in a 1-1 tie against then-ranked No. 21 Chico State last season.
