IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 23 Cal State San Marcos softball team (2-0) opened the 2025 season with hard-fought victories in the Concordia University Irvine Kickoff Classic on Friday in Irvine. The Cougars registered a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Chaminade before closing the day with an 11-8 win over Hawaii Hilo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chaminade took a 1-0 lead after four walks were awarded in the opening frame.
- CSUSM starting pitcher Jayline Sloss threw a four-pitch third inning thanks to a flyout to right and two mid-infield lineouts.
- In the fourth, Jillian Albayati drove in the tying run on an RBI single to left center field after Gianna Lombardi led off with a single through the right side.
- The Chaminade defense got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth.
- CSUSM took its first lead of the game in the top of the sixth. Aneesa Arredondo was awarded first on a hit by pitch, then stole second and came home on Albayati's groundout off the pitcher to make it 2-1 Cougars.
- Sloss' no-hitter was eliminated in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out Miranda Diaz single. The Silverswords evened the game at 2-all on a bases-loaded groundout by Mikala Jacobsen.
- CSUSM loaded the bases after Paige Donnelly, Savannah Coyle and Gianna Lombardi hit three consecutive singles to start off the top of the seventh. After a wild pitch gave CSUSM a 3-2 lead, Arredondo ripped out a 2-RBI double to left field to make it 5-2 Cougars.

- CSUSM relief pitcher Savannah Coyle (1-0) picked up the win after 1.2 innings in the circle, relinquishing one run on no hits and two walks.
- Starting pitcher Jayline Sloss got a no-decision after 5.1 innings, striking out four while walking a career-high seven.
- Chaminade's Kam Lopez (0-1), who came into the game in relief, picked up the loss after 2.1 innings. She gave up four runs on four hits and one walk in the contest.
- CSUSM tallied 10 hits to Chaminade's two.
- The Silverswords drew nine walks while CSUSM only got two free passes.
- Savannah Coyle extended her streak of reaching base safely to nine games, carrying over from last season.
- CSUSM remains undefeated in the all-time series (4-0) against Chaminade.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Lauren Deplitch drew a leadoff walk to begin the game, Gianna Lombardi knocked out an RBI double to right center to put CSUSM up 1-0 in the first.
- UHH evened the game in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on a walk that Victoria Macias drove in on a double to right center.
- The Cougars retook the lead in the top of the second on a two-out RBI single by Brooklyn Ury that plated Jordan Elias to make it 2-1 CSUSM.
- The Vulcans got back on top in the bottom of the inning on a Jayda Favela RBI single followed by a bases-clearing 3-RBI double by Rayna White to go up 4-2 UHH.
- CSUSM evened the score again at 4-4 in the third after Paige Donnelly drove in Madison Waymire on an RBI double to left center before scoring on Delaney Prater's fielder's choice at second base.
- UHH pushed three more runs across in the bottom of the third on Kiani Nakamura's 2-RBI single and Kealohi Markham's RBI groundout.
- A triple down the right line by Donnelly scored two more runs for CSUSM to cut the gap to 7-6 in the top of the fourth.
- After both teams were held scoreless in their next at-bats, UHH extended its lead to 8-6 on a Lexie Tilton RBI single to right in the bottom of the fifth.
- The Cougars put up five runs in the top of sixth on Lombardi's 2-RBI double, pinch hitter Jillian Albayati's RBI triple, Mackenzie Kestler's sacrifice fly and Waymire's bases-loaded walk.
- Coyle gave up a leadoff single before forcing a lineout and a groundout double play to close out the game.

- CSUSM relief pitcher Sophie Hunter (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win in the circle after going three innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out one.
- 2024 CCAA save leader Savannah Coyle collected her first save of the season after two shutout innings and allowing just two hits.
- UHH's reliever Madi Lee (0-1) gave up three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings for the loss.
- Entering the game as a pinch hitter, Savannah Coyle extended her streak of reaching base safely to 10 games.
