CSUSM Posts 1-1 Draw Against CSUEB in Season Finale

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (4-7-7, 0-7-4 CCAA) closed out its 2024 season with a 1-1 draw against Cal State East Bay (5-7-5, 4-3-4 CCAA) on Thursday afternoon at The Cage.

GOALS
CSUSM – 82' Ryan Meinardus (Assisted by Ryan Brown)
CSUEB – 90' Oscar Avendano (Assisted by Pablo Almontes)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoreless after 45 minutes, CSUSM led in shots (7-6), shots on goal (5-3) and corner kick (2-1) as Ryan Meinardus led the period in shots with three.
  • A cross from outside the box on the left side by Ryan Brown found the head of Meinardus, who put a shot towards the goal. The ball barely crossed the goal line before keeper could get a hand on it, resulting in CSUSM taking a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute.
  • With what looked like a CSUSM victory on the horizon, a Cougar foul set up a Pioneer free kick outside the top of the box. Instead of shooting, Pablo Almontes put a low pass into the box, finding Oscar Avendano, who put a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to knot the game at 1-1 with 10 seconds remaining.

QUICK KICKS
  • Meinardus' goal was his team-leading ninth of the year and tied for the fourth most in a single season at CSUSM. He also ended the season with 20 points – the fifth most in a single season at CSUSM.
  • Brown's assist was his second of the season.
  • This was the third consecutive draw between the Cougars and Pioneers dating back to last season.
  • CSUSM ended the game with the advantage in shots (11-10), corner kicks (6-4) and possession (53%-47%) while East Bay had more shots on goal (7-6).
