Cougars Fall 2-1 in CCAA Home Opener

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (4-2-4, 0-2-1 CCAA) fell 2-1 in its CCAA home opener against Cal State San Bernardino (4-1-4, 2-0-1 CCAA) on Friday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. After a shot by Rafa Fonseca went off the right post, Reece Kilpin grabbed the rebound and put a shot into the right side of the goal from a yard out.
  • After a saved shot, CSUSB's Luis Ortner passed the rebound to Kilpin, who made a pass to his right to Brian Castillo. Castillo immediately took a shot from in front of the goal and put the ball into the back of the net to go up 2-0 in the 34th minute.
  • CSUSM cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 40th minute. A corner kick by Stefano Brunetto found Ryan Meinardus, who put a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal from the middle of the box.
  • After one half, CSUSM had the advantage in shots (8-5) and corner kicks (4-0) while CSUSB led in shots on goal (2-1).
  • The final 45 minutes went scoreless as CSUSM once again led the half in shots at 7-4 and corner kicks at 4-1.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM ended the game with the advantage in shots (15-9) and corner kicks (8-1) while CSUSB had more shots on goal (4-3).
  • The Cougars possessed the ball for 56% of the game while 69% of its possessions occurred in Coyote territory.
  • Meinardus' goal was his team-leading sixth of the season while Brunetto's assist was his team-leading fourth of the year.
