CSUSM Upsets No. 22 CSUSB on the Road, 84-77

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (6-8, 5-3 CCAA) earned its second win over a top-25 opponent this season as it came away with an 84-77 victory on the road at No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino (10-4, 5-3 CCAA) on Thursday night at Cousoullis Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars began the game up 5-0 with a jumper by Collins and a Pope 3-pointer in the first minute of play.
  • Down 7-2, the Coyotes scored five consecutive points of their own with free throws by Evan Guillory and a 3-pointer by Robby Robinson to know the game at 7-all with 15:37 left in the period.
  • CSUSB took its first lead of the game at 17-16 on a layup by Robinson with 10:12 to go in the half.
  • Tied at 23 at the 6:56 mark of the first half, the Cougars went on a 17-4 run to go up 40-27 with a layup by Henderson with 1:06 remaining.
  • CSUSM took its largest lead of the first half at 43-28 as Pope made a 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining.
  • CSUSB cut the deficit right before the halftime intermission with a Guillory layup with two seconds left to make it 43-30.
  • The Cougars shot 59.4% (19-of-32) from the field in the first half while holding the Coyotes to 37.9% (11-of-29).
  • CSUSM opened took a 15-point lead once again as Collins opened the second half with a jumper with 19:34 to go at 45-30.
  • CSUSB whittled CSUSM's lead down to four at 49-45 with 12:57 to play after going on a 15-4 run.
  • Despite the Coyotes making a big run, the Cougars kept their cushion of four or more points and once again took a double-digit lead at 77-66 with two good free throws by Collins with 1:53 remaining.
  • CSUSB only brought down the deficit to seven points in the final two minutes of play and saw CSUSM take the 84-77 victory.
  • The Cougars were outscored 47-41 in the second half but shot 53.3% (16-of-30) while holding the Coyotes to 47.1% (16-of-34).
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars posted their second win over a ranked opponent this season, previously defeating then-No. 10 Chico State at The Sports Center on Dec. 9.
  • This is the third straight season in which the Cougars knocked off a ranked Coyote team.
  • CSUSM's last six top-25 wins since the 2021-22 season have been against Cal State San Bernardino and Chico State, notching three apiece.
  • This was CSUSM's first-ever win on the road at CSUSB in six attempts.
  • CSUSM shot a season-best 56.5% (35-of-62) from the field while CSUSB came in at 42.9% (27-of-63).
  • The Cougars had their second-best 3-point performance of the season at 50% (7-of-14).
  • The Coyotes had the second-lowest free throw percentage by a CSUSM opponent this season at 43.8% (7-of-16).
  • The Cougars tallied 20 assists to the Coyotes' 16 and had more steals at 7-5.
  • CSUSM only turned the ball over 11 times to CSUSB's 15.
  • The Coyotes won the rebound battle at 39-33.
  • CSUSM scored 14 points off CSUSB' 15 turnovers.
  • The Coyotes only had the lead for 23 seconds while the Cougars had it for 36:58.
  • Collins ended up one rebound and two assists shy of a triple double as he led the game with 26 points.
  • Collins' eight assists were the most by a Cougar this season.
  • Henderson recorded his fifth double-double of the year.
