CSUSM Posts 3-0 Shutout Against Fresno Pacific

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (2-0-0) posted a 3-0 shutout win against Fresno Pacific (0-3-0) on Thursday afternoon at The Cage.

CSUSM – 67' Danielle Paulson (Assisted by Kaci Embree and Gabby Marsh)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 16th minute, Huntington took a shot that went off the FPU keeper. Kia'aina picked up the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net to give CSUSM an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Cougars ended the half with a 16-2 shot lead.
  • CSUSM made it a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute. From the top of the box, Kia'aina fed the ball to Jensen in the middle of the box, who proceeded to put a hard roller into the left side of the goal.
  • On a corner kick by Embree, she made a pass to Marsh who immediately passed it back to Embree outside of the box. Embree made a high pass across the box to the head of Paulson, who headed the ball over the keeper and gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead in the 67th minute.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM heavily outshot FPU at 25-7 while putting 16 shots on goal.
  • The Cougars' 25 shots were their most since beginning NCAA Division II play (2015-present) and their most since tallying 40 against Bethesda in 2014.
  • This is the first time CSUSM has scored five goals in its first two games since 2013.
  • The Cougars also took 12 corner kicks for the game to the Sunbirds' three.
  • Paulson led the game with four shots.
  • Kia'aina, Jensen and Paulson each tallied their first goals of the season.
  • CSUSM had possession for 57% of the match with 74% of its possessions coming in FPU territory.

CSUSM will return to The Cage on Saturday to face cross-county foe (RV) Point Loma at 2 p.m.
