Cougars Ready for Wildcats, Warriors at The Sports Center

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (4-8, 2-2 CCAA) will conclude its four-match homestand this week, hosting Chico State (4-4, 1-3 CCAA) in a 5 p.m. matchup on Friday before taking on Stanislaus State (6-6, 1-3 CCAA) on Saturday at 3 p.m. 

LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars went 0-2 last weekend at home. 
  • CSUSM dropped a heartbreaker to Cal State Dominguez Hills (26-28, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 17-15) on Friday night. 
  • On Saturday, the Cougars were swept by then-No. 23 Cal State LA by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-18. 
  • In eight sets, Isabelle Bakken tallied 18 kills on 42 attempts and made only one hitting error for a .405 clip on the weekend. 

BY THE NUMBERS
  • CSUSM ranks third in the CCAA in team digs with 694.
  • With 515 assists, the Cougars remain third in the conference.
  • Tori Goff is the CCAA leader and ranks 56th in the nation with 23 service aces.
  • Goff is dishing out 8.73 assists per set, ranking her fourth in the CCAA. 
  • Mia Christensen is third in the CCAA with 166 total digs while ranking sixth in digs per set with 3.46. 
  • Head Coach Andrea Leonard reached a career milestone – her 200th CSUSM win – against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 16. 
  • Leonard is eight wins away from collecting her 300th career victory as a collegiate head coach.

FRIDAY VS. CHICO

  • This will be the 12th time CSUSM and Chico have faced each other, with all meetings occurring during the NCAA Division II era (2015-present). 
  • CSUSM is 8-3 in the all-time series against the Wildcats and 4-1 when playing on its home court.
  • The Cougars enter Friday's match on a six-match win streak capped by a pair of sweeps in last year's series. 
  • After opening CCAA play with three consecutive losses to then-No. 21 Cal State LA (0-3), Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3) and Sonoma State (1-3), Chico registered a five-set victory over Cal Poly Humboldt last Saturday at home. 
  • The Wildcats only played in one non-conference tournament, going 3-1 with wins over Academy of Art (3-2), Fresno Pacific (3-1) and Western New Mexico (3-0) while dropping a match to Western Oregon (1-3). 
  • Chico ranks last in multiple statistical categories in the CCAA including blocks per set (1.03), kills per set (10.74), assists per set (9.52) and hitting percentage (.150). 
  • Zoe DiNardo ranks second in the conference in attacks per set (10.03).
  • Chico was picked to finish last in the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

SATURDAY AGAINST STAN STATE

  • The Cougars are 7-4 in the all-time series against the Warriors. 
  • The visiting team has been victorious in both 2021 and 2022 with the Cougars recording a sweep two years ago and a 3-1 victory last season in Turlock. Stan State has claimed five-set victories in the last two matches played in The Sports Center.
  • The Warriors began CCAA play at 1-3 with three consecutive losses to Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3), then-No. 21 Cal State LA (1-3) and Cal Poly Humboldt (2-3) before upsetting RV Sonoma State with a sweep last Saturday at home. 
  • Stan State is 0-3 on the road this season. 
  • The Warriors are second in the CCAA in blocks per set (2.27) and digs per set (17.47) while leading the conference in total digs (67). 
  • Eyriana Eatmon is tied with Goff with a CCAA-leading 23 service aces. 
  • Three-time CCAA Defensive Player of the Week Gabby Rawson is the CCAA leader in digs per set (5.89) and total digs (259), ranking seventh and 11th in Division II, respectively. 
  • Stan State was selected to finish seventh in the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

LOOK INSIDE THE COUGARS

  • The Cougars return five starters from the 2022 season - Trinity Barr (OH), Sofia Hedqvist (OH), Jessica Thomas (OH), Mia Christensen (DS/L) and Jackie Phillips (DS/L)
  • Seven will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with four being true freshmen and three junior college transfers. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2022 campaign with an 8-17 overall record and were 7-11 in CCAA play – eighth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2022 ranked seventh in blocks per set (1.87). 
  • In the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish ninth.

THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 13th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 200-154 (.565) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 292-280 (.510) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
