SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team will open its 2023 season at Concordia University Irvine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
LAST SEASON

• CSUSM finished the 2022 season tied for sixth in the CCAA standings with Sonoma State, but was eliminated from playing in the CCAA Tournament due to losing to the Seawolves in the regular season.
• The Cougars' sixth-place finish was its best since beginning CCAA play in 2015.
• CSUSM tallied a winning home record of 6-4-1 in 2022.
• The Cougars came close to upsetting then-No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona during conference play, but settled for a 2-2 draw.
• Curtiz Collazos, Oliver Reader and Derek Westwood were each named All-CCAA honorable mentions for their play during the season.
• The Cougars were the most accurate team in the CCAA and 19th in all of Division II, with a 51.2 percent of their shots being on target of the goal.

 
THIS YEAR'S COUGARS

• CSUSM's 2023 roster consists of 29 student-athletes with 20 returners and nine newcomers.
• Stefano Brunetto returns as CSUSM's points leader in 2022 as he tallied eight with two goals and four assists.
• The Cougars were picked to finish eighth in the 2023 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

SEASON OPENER AT CUI

• Saturday's game will be the season opener for both CSUSM and CUI.
• The Cougars and Golden Eagles have faced each other every season since 2016.
• CUI leads the all-time series at 6-4 and has won the past three matches against CSUSM.
• The Cougars' last win of the series came in Irvine in 2018.
• The Golden Eagles tied for fourth in the PacWest Conference last season with a league record of 6-3-1 and finished the season 7-9-2 overall.
• CUI was picked to finish fourth in the 2023 PacWest Preseason Coaches Poll.
• Top player Anthony Morales returns for CUI as he led the team in goals (7) and points (15) in 2022 and was selected as the 2023 Preseason PacWest Player of the Year.

THE PULVERS FILE

• This season marks the 18th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
• Pulvers has a 127-114-29 (.524) record as CSUSM's head men's coach.
• In 26 seasons as a collegiate head men's soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 253-185-43 (.571) career record.
• He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women's program.
• From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men's and women's soccer teams.
