Cougars Shut Out Toros on Second Day of NCAA West Regional

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Earning its second win of the 2023 NCAA West Regional, the No. 6-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team (29-19) shut out No. 2-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills (36-18) by a score of 5-0 on Friday at Seawolf Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM posted two runs in the bottom of the first inning with a bases-loaded walk by Madison Waymire and a sacrifice fly to center by Albayati that scored Gutierrez to make it 2-0.
  • The Cougars took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI double to right center by Albayati and an RBI single by Arredondo.
  • The top of the fourth saw CSUSM go up 5-0 with a one-out RBI single by Gutierrez.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM starter Jayline Sloss (8-7) earned her second win of the West Regional as she threw 5.0 scoreless innings while allowing a hit, two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
  • CSUDH starter Alyssa Olague (17-9) took the loss as she allowed two earned runs and three hits in just a third of an inning.
  • This was CSUSM's seventh NCAA Tournament victory.
  • The Cougars matched their season high for hits with 12.
  • Donnelly posted her team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season while Gutierrez had her 13th.
  • Kestler extended her reached-base streak to 14 games.
  • This was CSUSM's seventh shutout win of the year.
  • The Cougars and Toros are now tied at 18-all in the all-time series.


UP NEXT
With no losses, CSUSM will have two cracks at advancing to the NCAA West Super Regional on Saturday. CSUSM will face the winner of today's 3:30 p.m. game at 11 a.m. tomorrow. If necessary, the Cougars would also play in the final game of the West Regional at 1:30 p.m.
