SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 23/22 Cal State San Marcos men's golf team will travel to Northern California for the Hanny Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State on Monday and Tuesday at Turlock Golf & Country Club in Turlock. 

LAST TIME OUT

• The Cougars won their second tournament of the season after extremely high winds in Alameda canceled the third round of the Pioneer Shootout on March 14. 
• CSUSM shot a two-round total of 10-under 566 (282-284) on day one. 
• Greg Mouser was named to the All-Tournament Team after finishing in a three-way tie for first place. Mouser carded a 8-under 136 (69-67) with a tournament-high eight birdies. 
• Mouser picked up his second CCAA Co-Golfer of the Week honor following the tournament (see below).

HANNY INVITATIONAL

• CSUSM will be making its sixth appearance in the Hanny Invitational this season. 
• Prior to the Hanny Invitational, Stan State hosted the Buzzini Invitational, which the Cougars competed in four times (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006)
• Last season, the Cougars placed 13th out of 15 teams. 
• The Cougars had their most successful finish in 2015 with second place out of 18 teams. 
• Western Washington is the defending champion after winning by one stroke over Simon Fraser in 2022 with a 2-over 866. 
• WWU's Aidan Thain and Tyler Fitchett of Saint Martn's shared individual medalist honors with a 7-over 209. 
• Matthew Moss was CSUSM's top golfer in last year's tournament, placing 40th with an 11-over 227. 

    

 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

• With eight returners from the 2021-22 team, this year's squad only has one new face with transfer Patrick Jaksch from Saddleback College. 
• Redshirt sophomore Matt Pennington returns to defend his CCAA Tournament Title and NCAA West/South Central Regional Title. 
• The 2021-22 team won three tournaments including the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational. 
• CSUSM placed in the top 10 in eight of its 10 tournaments last season including a third-place finish at the CCAA Championships. 

THE HUTTON FILE

• Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
• In his 13 years as the Cougar men's coach and nine years as the Cougar women's coach, Hutton has led CSUSM to 53 tournament victories (29 women/24 men). 
• The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
• The CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
• Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019 and 2022. 
• In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
