CSUSM to Wrap Up Regular Season Against CSUMB, CSUEB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  With its magic number down to one, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (12-12, 10-6 CCAA) will host Cal State Monterey Bay (8-15, 5-11 CCAA) on Friday at 5 p.m. before taking on Cal State East Bay (12-11, 8-8 CCAA) on Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. 

Prior to Saturday's game, CSUSM will honor seniors Trinity Barr, Mia Christensen, Sofia Hedqvist and Mackenzie Jennings
LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars went 1-1 last weekend in its final road matches of the regular season with a four-set loss at RV Cal State LA on Friday before posting a come-from-behind five-set victory at Cal State Dominguez Hill on Saturday. 
  • At CSULA, CSUSM went extra points in the first three sets (24-26, 26-24, 26-28) before falling 19-25 in the fourth set. 
  • The next day, the Cougars got payback against CSUDH with a five-set victory by scores of 20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-8. 
  • Isabelle Bakken recorded a .447 clip with 22 kills on 38 attempts and only five errors in addition to 12 total blocks on the weekend.  

BY THE NUMBERS
  • CSUSM saw its five-match win streak – a program best during the NCAA Division II era (2015-present) – come to an end. The Cougars have accomplished this feat two other times – Sept. 1-15, 2018 and Sept. 5-7, 2019. 
  • CSUSM sits in sixth place in the CCAA standings with a two-match lead over seventh-place Cal State East Bay. With two matches remaining in the regular season, the Cougars need only one win to make their fifth CCAA Tournament appearance. 
  • The Cougars are one conference victory away from tying a program-record 11 wins which was set in CSUSM's first year of CCAA postseason eligibility in 2017. 
  • Head Coach Andrea Leonard reached her second milestone of the season, tallying her 300th career win as a head coach on Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Earlier this season, Leonard collected her 200th CSUSM win against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 16. 
  • With 1,395 digs, the Cougars moved to fourth in the conference.
  • Tori Goff is ranked third in the CCAA with 817 assists and fourth with 8.69 assists per set. 
  • Mia Christensen is sixth in the CCAA with 332 total digs and seventh with 3.69 digs per set.

FRIDAY AGAINST MONTEREY BAY

  • On Sept. 16, the Cougars defeated Monterey Bay in four sets in the Otter Sports Center by scores of 25-16, 26-24, 30-32 and 25-23. 
  • The Otters were swept by San Francisco State (27-29, 14-25, 18-25) and then-No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino (15-25, 24-26, 23-25) last weekend. 
  • Monterey Bay is 1-6 on the road this season with their one away victory coming at Cal Poly Humboldt on Oct. 28. 
  • With a 5-11 CCAA record, CSUMB has already been eliminated from the CCAA Tournament. 
  • The Otters' .179 hitting percentage ranks eighth in the CCAA while opponents are putting together a .204 clip against them which ranks seven in the conference. 
  • CSUSM is 6-3 all-time against Monterey Bay and are 4-0 when playing in The Sports Center. 
  • The Cougars have won four of the last five meetings. 
  • Kaylie Honberger leads CSUMB with 2.97 kills per set and 255 kills. 
  • CSUMB was selected to finish eighth in the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

SENIOR DAY AGAINST EAST BAY

  • The Pioneers will face Pomona on Friday at 1 p.m. before facing the Cougars on Saturday. A loss at Pomona would knock East Bay out of the tournament, and CSUSM would clinch the sixth and final spot. 
  • CSUEB snapped a two-match losing streak on Saturday with a sweep against San Francisco State. They previously fell to Sonoma State in five and were swept by Cal State San Bernardino.
  • Earlier this season, the Cougars registered a four-set victory in Hayward by scores of 25-21, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-23. 
  • The Pioneers are leading the CCAA in team attacks per set (37.46) and team digs (1,541) while ranking second in digs per set (17.12). 
  • East Bay has the second-worst aces per set average in the CCAA at 1.42. 
  • Mia Jordan ranks sixth in the CCAA with a .342 hitting percentage. 
  • The two teams are tied 6-6 in the all-time series while the Cougars are 4-1 when playing the Pioneers on their home court. 
  • East Bay was selected to finish fifth in the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

LOOK INSIDE THE COUGARS

  • The Cougars return five starters from the 2022 season - Trinity Barr (OH), Sofia Hedqvist (OH), Jessica Thomas (OH), Mia Christensen (DS/L) and Jackie Phillips (DS/L)
  • Seven will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with four being true freshmen and three junior college transfers. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2022 campaign with an 8-17 overall record and were 7-11 in CCAA play – eighth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2022 ranked seventh in blocks per set (1.87). 
  • In the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish ninth.

THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 13th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 208-158 (.568) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 300-284 (.514) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
