Cougars Advance to CCAA Championship Game with 1-0 Win Against LA

SEASIDE, Calif. – The second-seeded Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (10-2-6) is headed to the championship game of the CCAA Tournament for the very first time as the Cougars earned a 1-0 win over third-seeded Cal State LA (9-2-8) in Friday's semifinal game at Cardinale Stadium on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoreless in the first half, CSUSM outshot LA at 4-3 and was up in corner kicks at 2-1.
  • Just 37 seconds into the second half, the Cougars struck gold. Jensen played the ball out wide to Huntington on the right side of the box. Huntington then hit a hard shot that went through the keeper's hands to put CSUSM up 1-0 in the 46th minute.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • This was CSUSM's first CCAA Tournament semifinal win.
  • The Cougars extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games, tying the program record set in 2014. CSUSM's current streak began on Sept. 29.
  • Huntington's goal was her second of the season while Jensen's assist was the first of her career.
  • CSUSM outshot LA, 10-4. The Cougars also put four shots on goal to the Golden Eagles' one.
  • The Cougars had a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
  • CSUSM controlled the ball for 58% of the game and had possession in LA territory for 72% of the match.
  • This was the Cougars' 12th shutout of the season and was the 10th by keeper Allison Marcure, tying for the third most in a season in program history. The feat was last accomplished by Amanada Sears in 2014.
  • The Golden Eagles were receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll and were ranked third in the latest edition of the NCAA West Region rankings.
  • CSUSM's win over LA was its first since 2018 in San Marcos and moved the all-time series to a draw at 4-4-2.
  • This is the Cougars' first 10-win season since earning 11 in 2014 and is the sixth in program history.

CSUSM will face CCAA Regular-Season Champion Cal Poly Pomona (11-4-3) in Sunday's championship game of the CCAA Tournament at 1 p.m.
