CSUSM Travels to No. 14 CSUSB, SF State This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (6-8, 4-2 CCAA) will hit the road this week, traveling to No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino (11-3, 14-2 CCAA) on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match before wrapping up the week at San Francisco State (8-6, 4-2 CCAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars went 2-0 last weekend at home. 
  • CSUSM rebounded from a slow start on Friday to collect a four-set victory (12-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20) over Chico State. 
  • Against Chico State, Alyssa Gurrola tallied a .542 clip with 14 kills on 24 attempts and one errors for a career best.
  • On Saturday, the Cougars completed their first sweep of 2023 with a hard-fought win (28-26, 25-23, 27-25) over Stanislaus State. 
  • Trinity Barr's .406 clip against Stan State was her second highest of the season after making a season-low one error on 32 attempts while recording 14 kills.
  • Tori Goff was named CCAA Setter of the Week (click here for full release). 

BY THE NUMBERS
  • With 612 assists, the Cougars moved into second in the conference.
  • Tori Goff moved to second in the CCAA and ranks 78th in the nation with 25 service aces.
  • Goff is dishing out 9.25 assists per set, ranking her now third in the CCAA. 
  • Mia Christensen is fourth in the CCAA with 190 total digs while ranking sixth in digs per set with 3.45. 
  • Head Coach Andrea Leonard reached a career milestone – her 200th CSUSM win – against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 16. 
  • Leonard is six wins away from collecting her 300th career victory as a collegiate head coach.

THURSDAY AT NO. 14 CSUSB

  • This will be the 14th time CSUSM and CSUSB have faced each other, with all meetings occurring during the NCAA Division II era (2015-present). 
  • San Bernardino holds a 12-1 lead in the all-time series against the CSUSM and are 6-0 when playing at home. 
  • The Cougars lone win over the Coyotes came in 2017 in The Sports Center when CSUSM recorded a five-set win (25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 15-9). 
  • The Coyotes have tallied three losses this season that includes a sweep and a five-set non-conference win by Sonoma State in addition to a four-set victory by Cal State LA. 
  • CSUSB is the CCAA leader with 681 kills and 104 aces. 
  • The Coyotes rank second in the conference in aces per set (1.96), hitting percentage (.278) and opponent hitting percentage (.160). 
  • Jenna Patton is boasting a .420 hitting percentage ranking her second in the CCAA and 10th in the conference. 
  • CSUSB was picked to finish third in the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

SATURDAY AT SF STATE

  • Prior to facing CSUSM on Saturday, the Gators will host Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday in The Swamp. 
  • The Cougars are 3-6 in the all-time series against the Gators and have yet to record a win in The Swamp. 
  • The two teams only faced each other once last season with SF State recording a sweep over CSUSM. 
  • In 2021, CSUSM split its season series with the Gators with the home team recording a five-set victory. 
  • Like CSUSM, the Gators are 4-2 in the conference standings with losses to Sonoma State (1-3) and Cal State LA (0-3). 
  • SF State is 2-0 at home this season. 
  • The Gators are leading the CCAA in assists (615) and are second in kills per set (12.96). 
  • SF State ranks second to last in the conference in blocks per set (1.30). 
  • Kimberly DeBoer has dished out a CCAA-leading 533 assists this season and ranks second in the conference with 10.25 assists per set.

LOOK INSIDE THE COUGARS

  • The Cougars return five starters from the 2022 season - Trinity Barr (OH), Sofia Hedqvist (OH), Jessica Thomas (OH), Mia Christensen (DS/L) and Jackie Phillips (DS/L)
  • Seven will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with four being true freshmen and three junior college transfers. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2022 campaign with an 8-17 overall record and were 7-11 in CCAA play – eighth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2022 ranked seventh in blocks per set (1.87). 
  • In the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish ninth.

THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 13th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 202-154 (.567) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 294-280 (.512) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
