Cougars Travel to Stan State, Chico State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (9-11, 7-5 CCAA) will begin its final road trip of the regular season this week, traveling to Stanislaus State (8-13, 3-9 CCAA) on Friday for a 5 p.m. match before concluding at Chico State (4-12, 1-11 CCAA) on Saturday at 3 p.m. 

LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars went 2-0 last weekend at home. 
  • CSUSM recorded its second consecutive five-set victory, defeating Sonoma State on Friday, Oct. 20 by scores of 25-16, 19-25, 16-25, 25-19 and 15-8. 
  • The next day, the Cougars tallied their second CCAA sweep of the season by taking down Cal Poly Humboldt 25-23, 25-15 and 25-22.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • CSUSM is on a three-match win streak, its longest of the season. 
  • CSUSM is in a tie for fifth place alongside Sonoma State in the CCAA standings, one game back from Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State who are tied for third. 
  • Friday's five-set victory was CSUSM's third of the season. In addition to their win over Cal Poly Pomona, the Cougars posted a five-set comeback over St. Edward's on Sept. 8 in the Cougar Classic. 
  • With 1,133 digs, the Cougars remain third in the conference.
  • Tori Goff is ranked third in the CCAA with 31 aces this season. 
  • Mia Christensen is fifth in the CCAA with 261 total digs and digs per set with 3.53. 
  • Head Coach Andrea Leonard reached a career milestone – her 200th CSUSM win – against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 16. 
  • Leonard is three wins away from collecting her 300th career victory as a collegiate head coach.

FRIDAY AT STANISLAUS STATE

  • The Warriors are 10th in the CCAA standings, four matches out of sixth place.  
  • Stan State is 5-5 when playing at home this season. 
  • After defeating Chico State in back-to-back matches, the Warriors were swept by San Francisco State and then-No. 11 Cal State San Bernardino at home this past weekend. 
  • On Sept. 30, the Cougars swept the Warriors by scores of 28-26, 25-23 and 27-25. 
  • CSUSM has won the last two meetings in Turlock against Stan State and are 3-2 when playing in Fitzpatrick Arena. 
  • The Cougars are 8-4 in the all-time series against the Warriors.
  • The Warriors are the CCAA leaders in aces per set (1.88) and total aces (141). 
  • Stan State has the second-worst hitting percentage in the CCAA at .163.
  • Alex Byrd is the CCAA leader in blocks per set (1.16) and total blocks (87). 
  • Three-time CCAA Defensive Player fo the Week Gabby Rawson is the CCAA leader in digs per set and ranks 13th in NCAA Division II with 5.36.

SATURDAY AT CHICO STATE

  • The Wildcats will face Pomona on Friday before going up against the Cougars on Saturday.
  • Chico State enters the week on an eight-match losing streak dating back to its last win coming against Cal Poly Humboldt on Sept. 23, a five-set match (29-27, 25-22, 24-26, 22-25, 15-12). 
  • The Wildcats are 1-4 at home this season. 
  • CSUSM has won its last seven matches against the Wildcats with three of them being sweeps. 
  • Earlier this season, CSUSM recorded a four-set victory over Chico State in The Sports Center by scores of 12-25, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-20. 
  • CSUSM holds a 9-3 all-time record over the Wildcats and are 4-1 when playing in Acker Gymnasium. 
  • The Wildcats are last in the CCAA in assists (9.53), blocks (1.10) and kills (10.53) per set as well have the lowest hitting percentage (.155) and opponent hitting percentage (.244).  
  • Zoe DiNardo has the second-most attacks per set (9.87) in the CCAA.

LOOK INSIDE THE COUGARS

  • The Cougars return five starters from the 2022 season - Trinity Barr (OH), Sofia Hedqvist (OH), Jessica Thomas (OH), Mia Christensen (DS/L) and Jackie Phillips (DS/L)
  • Seven will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with four being true freshmen and three junior college transfers. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2022 campaign with an 8-17 overall record and were 7-11 in CCAA play – eighth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2022 ranked seventh in blocks per set (1.87). 
  • In the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish ninth.

THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 13th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 205-157 (.566) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 297-283 (.512) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
