CSUSM Gets Double Dose of No. 17 CPP This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (6-10, 4-4 CCAA) will take on its travel partner twice this week, traveling to No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday for a 5 p.m. match before returning to The Sports Center to host the Broncos at 3 p.m. on Saturday. 

LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars went 0-2 last weekend on the road. 
  • CSUSM fell in three sets (17-25, 16-26, 16-25) at then-No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino last Thursday. 
  • On Saturday, the Cougars dropped a four-set match (15-26, 17-25, 25-22, 18-25) at San Francisco State. 

BY THE NUMBERS
  • CSUSM is in a four-way tie for fifth place in the CCAA standings. 
  • With 875 digs, the Cougars moved into fourth in the conference.
  • Tori Goff ranks third in the CCAA with 27 service aces.
  • Goff is dishing out 8.87 assists per set, ranking her third in the CCAA. 
  • Mia Christensen is fourth in the CCAA with 208 total digs while ranking fifth in digs per set with 3.47. 
  • Head Coach Andrea Leonard reached a career milestone – her 200th CSUSM win – against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 16. 
  • Leonard is six wins away from collecting her 300th career victory as a collegiate head coach.

NO. 17 CPP BREAKDOWN

  • The Broncos are coming off their first back-to-back loss run of the season. 
  • CPP got swept by San Francisco State on Thursday by scores of 24-26, 18-25 and 24-26. 
  • On Saturday, the Broncos finished on the wrong end of a five-set match to then-No. 14 CSUSB by scores of 20-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15, 8-15. 
  • The Cougars are 5-8 against CPP in the all-times series (3-5 away and 2-3 home records). 
  • The Broncos have been victorious in the last three meetings. 
  • In 2019, CSUSM swept the season series with back-to-back sweeps over the Broncos. 
  • CPP is tied for second alongside CSUSB in the CCAA standings with a 6-2 conference record.

LOOK INSIDE THE COUGARS

  • The Cougars return five starters from the 2022 season - Trinity Barr (OH), Sofia Hedqvist (OH), Jessica Thomas (OH), Mia Christensen (DS/L) and Jackie Phillips (DS/L)
  • Seven will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with four being true freshmen and three junior college transfers. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2022 campaign with an 8-17 overall record and were 7-11 in CCAA play – eighth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2022 ranked seventh in blocks per set (1.87). 
  • In the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish ninth.

THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 13th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 202-154 (.567) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 294-280 (.512) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
