SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Looking to begin CCAA play on a strong note, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (1-6) will travel to Sonoma State (7-1) for a 5 p.m. matchup on Thursday before squaring off at Cal Poly Humboldt (1-2) on Saturday at 5 p.m.
LAST WEEK
- CSUSM dropped three consecutive matches this past weekend at the Seaside Invitational hosted by Point Loma in San Diego.
- The Cougars fell in four sets to Simon Fraser last Friday before being swept by host PLNU in the night match.
- On Saturday, CSUSM fought hard but eventually dropped a four-set match to Concordia University Irvine.
- Trinity Barr tallied a team-best 39 kills and 33 digs in the three matches.

THURSDAY AT SONOMA STATE
- This will be the first time CSUSM has played at Sonoma State since 2017 when the Cougars snapped a 13-game home win streak for the Seawolves.
- The Cougars 4-2 in the all-time series against the Seawolves.
- CSUSM has won the last four meetings between the two teams.
- The Seawolves went 4-0 in their home tournament last weekend that included three sweeps over Holy Names, Academy of Art and Dominican in addition to a four-set victory over Fresno Pacific.
- SSU is holding their opponents to a CCAA-best .074 attack percentage and is leading the conference in aces with 2.67 per set.
- Sophomore setter Brynna Slayton is ranked third in the nation with 23 aces.
- Sonoma State was picked to finish sixth in the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

SATURDAY AT HUMBOLDT
- CSUSM holds a 5-2 record in the all-time series against Cal Poly Humboldt.
- The Cougars are in the midst of a five-match win streak over the Lumberjacks with four of the five recorded as sweeps.
- In the last meeting in Arcata, the Cougars won the first, third and fifth sets to take the match from the Jacks.
- This season, the Jacks have only played three matches after taking last weekend off. Humboldt went 1-2 in Western New Mexico's Green Chile Classic, registering a four-set win in the Jacks' season opener before falling to Holy Names and Wisconsin Parkside in four sets each.
- Avery McIntyre is ranked fourth in the CCAA with a .375 attack percentage.
- Humboldt was selected to finish last in the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.
2022 CSUSM VOLLEYBALL NOTES
- The Cougars return two starters from the 2021 season - Kiora Ridgeway (MB) and Madison Turner (S).
- Eight will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Thursday with four being true freshmen and four transferring from a four-year college.
- The 2021 season ended with CSUSM making its fourth consecutive appearance in the CCAA Volleyball Tournament - the most by any CSUSM program that requires a qualification.
- The Cougars finished their 2021 campaign with a 12-13 overall record and 9-9 in CCAA play – sixth in the CCAA standings.
- As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2021 ranked fourth in digs per set (15.22) and fifth in kills per set (12.55) and blocks per set (1.88).
- San Francisco State transfer Trinity Barr is featured on the 2022 CCAA Preseason Watchlist after earning All-CCAA first team honors last season.
- In the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish fourth.
THE LEONARD FILE
- Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 12th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
- Leonard has a 189-135 (.583) record as CSUSM's head coach.
- In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 281-261 (.518) career record.
- Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
