CSUSM Competes in Long Beach State's Gold Rush Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 13/11 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will compete in Long Beach State's Gold Rush tournament on Monday, Feb. 28 and Tuesday, March 1 at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. The Cougars will be competing against 10 NCAA Division I teams including No. 14/14 USC and No. 15/15 UCLA . 

PREVIOUS TOURNAMENT

  • The Cougars placed third out of 19 teams at the Visit Stockton Invitational on Feb. 15 on the course of Brookside Golf & Country Club. The site is where the NCAA Super Regionals will be held on May 2-4. 
  • Breann Horn captured her second tournament title of the season and third of her career. In the final round, Horn shot a 1-over 73 to finish with a 3-over 147 to win by one stroke. 
  • Horn also earned her third career CCAA Golfer of the Week honor (see below).

THE GOLF RUSH BREAKDOWN

  • The Gold Rush is hosted by Long Beach State. 
  • This marks CSUSM's first time competing in The Gold Rush. 
  • CSUSM is the first non-Division I team to compete in The Gold Rush. 
  • The 2021 Gold Rush team title was won by USC with an even-par 864 (290-290-284). 
  • The team will be playing two rounds on Monday and a final round on Tuesday.
  • The Cougars are paired to play alongside Sam Houston State and Cal State Northridge.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

HORN COLLECTS THIRD CCAA WEEKLY HONOR

  • Breann Horn captured the individual medalist win in the spring's first event on Feb. 14-15, earning her the CCAA Women's Golfer of the Week award.
  • Horn shot a 3-over 147 at the Visit Stockton Invitational, edging out two others by a stroke to take the title. The opening tournament was at Stockton's Brookside Country Club, the site of this year's NCAA Women's Super Regional on May 1-4.
  • Horn led the No. 17/13-ranked Cougars to a third-place team finish with CSUSM scoring 38-over 614, four back of Texas A&M International and West Texas A&M. There were 19 teams and 104 golfers at the event.
  • The junior from Lakeside, California, took off Monday with a 2-over 74 score, which was one of the lows. Horn then scored a 73 in Tuesday's final round.
  • The win was Horn's second tournament win of the season and third of her career. She also shared the CCAA Women's Golfer of the Week honor on Sept. 29 after tying for first at the RJGA Shootout in Goodyear, Arizona.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM only has two returners from the 2019-20 team.
  • With the last two seasons combined, six will be wearing Cougar Blue for the first time this year.
  • Prior to shutting down their season due to the pandemic, the then-No. 12/14 Cougars dominated the field of 14 at the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational with a 38-stroke victory.
  • CSUSM won five of the six tournaments they competed at in 2019-20.
  • 2019 NCAA Division II National Champion Jaime Jacob was not able to defend her title due to the NCAA cancelling the remaining of the 2020 season.

THE HUTTON FILE

  • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
  • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob. 
  • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019.
  • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
