Cougars Complete CCAA Series Sweep at Stan State

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team (10-1, 4-0 CCAA) completed a CCAA series sweep on Saturday, taking both ends of a doubleheader at Stanislaus State (2-7, 0-4 CCAA) on Warrior Softball Field. With scores of 6-3 and 3-2, the Cougars have record nine consecutive wins and are off to their best start since moving to NCAA Division II in 2016.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars scored first with a 1-0 lead in the second inning, scoring on Guiliano's infield groundout that plated Salgado who led off with a double to right.  
  • CSUSM doubled its lead after taking advantage of a pair of Stan State errors in the third inning.
  • The Warriors evened the game at 2-all in the bottom of the third inning on Karli Dalbianco's 2-RBI single to center field.
  • CSUSM retook the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Coyle knocked out a RBI single through the left side that scored Olivo. Klarissa Munoz, who was pinch running for Paige Donnelly, scored on the throw that got Coyle out after she attempted to stretch a single into a double.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Stan State scored on a CSUSM error to make it 4-3.
  • The Cougars tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the sixth after Andelin knocked out a 2-RBI single to center.

QUICK HITS
  • Starting pitcher Zoe Ballen (3-0) earned the second win of the weekend after throwing 5.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing three runs on five hits and one walk.
  • Stan State starter Delaney Pamplin (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits and a walk in a complete game while recording two strikeouts.
  • Coyle picked up her second save the season after allowing no runs on one hit over 2.0 innings of work.
  • For the seventh time this season, CSUSM registered double figures in hits with 11 against Stan State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars wasted no time, taking a quick 1-0 lead on Salgado's RBI single to score Guiliano, who led off the game with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
  • Gutierrez's RBI single to center in the top of the third plated Salgado, who reached on a Warrior error.
  • Waymire's RBI double in the fifth that extended CSUSM's lead to 3-0 proved to be necessary as the Warriors knocked in two runs on three hits and two Cougar errors in the bottom of the inning.
  • Coyle picked up her second save of the season after recording three strikeouts and held the Warriors hitless in the final two innings.

QUICK HITS
  • Starting pitcher Jayline Sloss (3-0) earned the win after throwing 5.0 innings with four strikeouts while allowing two unearned runs on six hits, two walks and a wild pitch.
  • Stan State starter Victoria Alarcon (0-1) took the loss after throwing a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while recording 10 strikeouts.
  • Guiliano improved her hitting streak to six games with a single to left in the top of the second.
  • This is CSUSM's second CCAA series sweep since joining the conference in 2016. In 2019, the Cougars swept Cal State East Bay on the road.
  • CSUSM's nine-game win streak is the best run in the NCAA Division II era.

The Cougars will return home to host Simon Fraser in a non-conference three-game series beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at noon.
