CSUSM Hosts Humboldt, Sonoma For Senior Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (7-16, 6-10 CCAA) will conclude its 2022 campaign this weekend, hosting Humboldt State Thursday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. before celebrating Senior Day when the Cougars welcome Sonoma State to The Sports Center on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. Prior to Saturday's match, CSUSM will honor Micah Hébert, Kiora Ridgeway and Madison Turner


LAST WEEK

  • CSUSM dropped both matches last week on the road. 
  • The Cougars fell in four sets (25-17, 23-25, 27-29, 19-25) at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night.  
  • CSUSM dropped three consecutive sets (12-25, 24-26, 17-25) at No. 23 Cal State LA on Saturday afternoon.

THURSDAY AGAINST HUMBOLDT

  • The Jacks have lost eight consecutive matches with their last win being a four-set victory over Chico State on Oct. 1. 
  • Humboldt is last in the conference standings and has been eliminated from the 2022 CCAA Tournament. 
  • The Jacks were swept twice last weekend by then-No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino and (RV) Cal Poly Pomona. 
  • Humboldt is ranked last in the CCAA in hitting percentage (.111), kills per set (9.18), opponent hitting percentage (.267), assists per set (8.06), blocks per set (1.12) and digs per set (13.12). 
  • Earlier this season, the Cougars swept (25-16, 25-17, 25-17) the Jacks in Aracta on Sept. 10. 
  • In a set to 25, Humboldt's seven points were the fewest allowed by CSUSM in the NCAA Division II era. 
  • CSUSM is 6-2 in the all-time series against the Jacks and 3-1 when playing in The Sports Center. 
  • After falling in their first two meetings, the Cougars have gone on a six-match win streak over the Jacks. 
  • Lindsey McLaughlin is leading the Humboldt offense this season with a 2.33 kills per set average. 
  • The Wildcats were voted to finish last in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

SENIOR SATURDAY AGAINST SONOMA STATE

  • Prior to facing the Cougars, the Seawolves will face Cal State East Bay in Hayward on Thursday. 
  • SSU has already clinched a spot in the 2022 CCAA Tournament, but the Seawolves can be as high as the second seed or as low as the sixth seed in the tournament. 
  • The Seawolves enter the week on a four-match win streak, taking down then-No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona and then-No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino last weekend.  
  • SSU is the only team this season to defeat both CPP and CSUSB in one weekend. 
  • CSULA leads the CCAA in aces per set (2.25) while ranking No. 19 in the Division II.  
  • Brynna Slayton is the CCAA leader in total aces (58) and aces per set (.69). Her aces per set is the third highest in the nation. 
  • The Cougars dropped three straight (17-25, 12-25, 18-25) against SSU on Sept. 8 in The Wolves' Den. 
  • CSUSM is 4-3 in the all-time series against the Seawolves and is 3-1 when playing in San Marcos (3-0 in The Sports Center). 
  • SSU was selected to finish sixth in the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

2022 CSUSM VOLLEYBALL NOTES

  • The Cougars return two starters from the 2021 season - Kiora Ridgeway (MB) and Madison Turner (S). 
  • Eight will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Thursday with four being true freshmen and four transferring from a four-year college. 
  • The 2021 season ended with CSUSM making its fourth consecutive appearance in the CCAA Volleyball Tournament - the most by any CSUSM program that requires a qualification. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2021 campaign with a 12-13 overall record and 9-9 in CCAA play – sixth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2021 ranked fourth in digs per set (15.22) and fifth in kills per set (12.55) and blocks per set (1.88). 
  • San Francisco State transfer Trinity Barr is featured on the 2022 CCAA Preseason Watchlist after earning All-CCAA first team honors last season. 
  • In the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish fourth.


THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 12th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 195-143 (.577) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 19 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 287-269 (.516) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
