Cougars Close Season with 2-0 Victory Against Coyotes

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (6-9-3, 4-5-2 CCAA) ended its season on a high note with a 2-0 victory against Cal State San Bernardino (5-5-7, 1-5-5 CCAA) on Thursday at The Cage.

GOALS
CSUSM – 26' Derek Westwood (Assisted by Jacob Johnston and Stefano Brunetto)
CSUSM – 54' Jacob Johnston (Assisted by Curtis Collazos)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM ended the stalemate in the 26th minute. Off a corner kick from Brunetto, Johnston headed the ball at the penalty kick marker to Westwood, who was standing six yards out on the right side. Westwood then put a low shot into the left side of the goal to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • The Cougars took a two-goal lead in the 54th minute. After a shot by Collazos was deflected off the CSUSB keeper, Johnston took the rebound from just in front of the keeper and put a low shot into the right side of the goal.

QUICK KICKS
  • The Coyotes outshot the Cougars 18-7 while all six shots on goal were saved by CSUSM keeper Jesus Mentado, tying his season high.
  • Westwood and John Williamson each led CSUSM with two shots while both of Westwood's shots were on goal.
  • Brunetto's assist gave him his team-leading eighth point of the season.
  • Westwood's goal was his first of the season, giving him the second-most points on the team with seven.
  • Both Johnston's goal and assist were his first of the year while Collazos' assist was his first.
  • This was CSUSM's first-ever conference win over CSUSB.
  • The Cougars are now 3-3 against the Coyotes when playing at home.
  • Despite winning and finishing the regular season tied for sixth in the CCAA standings with 14 points, CSUSM was eliminated from CCAA Tournament contention due to Sonoma State owning the head-to-head tiebreaker.
