Cougars Begin Four-Match Homestand Against CSUMB, SF State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (5-12, 4-6 CCAA) will look to snap a four-match losing skid this week when the Cougars host Cal State Monterey Bay (7-10, 3-7 CCAA) on Thursday at 5 p.m. and San Francisco State (10-7, 6-4 CCAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 


LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars were swept twice by Cal State East Bay last weekend. 
  • With eight matches remaining, the Cougars rank 34th in the nation and second in the CCAA with the toughest schedule in Division II.

PINK NIGHT VS. CSUMB

  • The Otters lost both of their matches against SF State last weekend, falling in four in San Francisco on Thursday before being swept at home on Saturday. 
  • CSUMB sits in ninth place in the CCAA standings, one game behind CSUSM. 
  • The Otters ranked fourth in the CCAA and 37th in Division II with 2.24 blocks per set. 
  • Mikayla Nolte is leading the charge in blocks, averaging 1.22 per set which ranks her second in the conference and 20th in the nation.
  • The Otters are 0-4 on the road in 2022. 
  • CSUSM is 4-3 in the all-time series against CSUMB and is 3-0 when playing in The Sports Center. 
  • The Cougars and Otters split the season series in 2021 with the home team winning each time. 
  • The Otters were voted to finish seventh in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

SF STATE SHOWDOWN

  • Prior to facing the Cougars, the Gators will head to Cal State East Bay on Thursday. 
  • The Gators will enter the weekend on a three-match win streak with a series sweep over CSUMB last week and three-set victory against CSUDH on Oct. 1. 
  • SF State is tied for sixth in the CCAA standings along side Sonoma State and has a two-match lead over CSUSM. 
  • The Gators rank second to last in the conference in blocks per set, averaging only 1.25. 
  • Kimberly DeBoer leads the CCAA in assists per set (10.36) and total assists (663) while Tamiya Wilson is the CCAA leader in kills per set (3.89), attacks per set (10.16), total kills (249) and total attacks (650). 
  • The Cougars are 3-5 in the all-time series against SF State and are 3-0 when playing in The Sports Center. 
  • In 2021, both matches between the Gators and Cougars went five sets with the home team being victorious. 
  • SF State was selected to finish fifth in the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

2022 CSUSM VOLLEYBALL NOTES

  • The Cougars return two starters from the 2021 season - Kiora Ridgeway (MB) and Madison Turner (S). 
  • Eight will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Thursday with four being true freshmen and four transferring from a four-year college. 
  • The 2021 season ended with CSUSM making its fourth consecutive appearance in the CCAA Volleyball Tournament - the most by any CSUSM program that requires a qualification. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2021 campaign with a 12-13 overall record and 9-9 in CCAA play – sixth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2021 ranked fourth in digs per set (15.22) and fifth in kills per set (12.55) and blocks per set (1.88). 
  • San Francisco State transfer Trinity Barr is featured on the 2022 CCAA Preseason Watchlist after earning All-CCAA first team honors last season. 
  • In the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish fourth.


THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 12th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 193-139 (.581) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 19 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 285-265 (.518) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
