CSUSM Competes in SoCal Freeway Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team will compete in the SoCal Freeway Challenge this weekend, facing Fresno Pacific and Azusa Pacific on Friday and Point Loma and Concordia University Irvine on Saturday. Friday's matches will be played on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona while Saturday's will be at CUI. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars went 1-1 in their opening weekend of the 2021 season, falling in three close sets to Fresno Pacific on Friday before rebounding with a dominating sweep over Dominican on Saturday.
  • In their first two matches, the Cougars held their opponents to an .167 attack percentage while out-digging them 94-76.
  • Freshman Stephanie Adams leads the Cougars with 4.17 kills per set while senior Kassy Doering recorded a CCAA-leading .588 clip with 22 kills on 34 attempts and only two errors.
  • On the defensive side, Grecia Cordero-Barr is ranked second in the conference, averaging 4.83 digs per set.

REMATCH AGAINST FPU, THEN APU SHOWDOWN

  • CSUSM dropped a very close match at FPU last Friday, falling in three by scores of 25-27, 23-25 and 25-27.
  • Friday's match will be the fifth meeting between CSUSM and FPU with the Cougars holding a 3-1 all-time record.
  • This will the third time these two teams have met on a neutral court with CSUSM notching both previous wins.
  • In the first meeting between these two teams, the Cougars pulled off a huge upset by taking down the then-NAIA top-ranked Sunbirds in four sets in CSUSM's inaugural season (2011).
  • APU holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series against CSUSM.
  • In the NCAA Division II era, CSUSM and APU have only faced each other once with CSUSM coming out on top with a sweep in 2019.
  • APU went 1-3 last weekend with losses to Simon Fraser (0-3), No. 22 Regis (1-3) and No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino (0-3). APU's lone victory was a five-set win over Cal State LA.
  • Joining FPU's Corine Acosta (Preseason Player of the Year) on the PacWest Conference Preseason team is APU's Annaka Jorgenson, who tallied 2.93 kills and 3.07 digs per set last weekend.
  • APU, the two-time defending PacWest Champion, is the conference favorite while FPU was picked to finish seventh in the 2021 PacWest Conference Volleyball Preseason Poll.

 

CLOSING OUT THE NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

  • CSUSM and PLNU has faced each other seven times with the Sea Lions holding a 5-2 lead, but the teams are tied 1-1 in the NCAA Division II era.
  • The Cougars opened the 2018 season with a five-set victory over the Sea Lions in the Cougar Classic.
  • In their last meeting, PLNU came out on top with a sweep over CSUSM in the D2 West Region Showcase on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino.
  • The Sea Lions went 1-3 in their Seaside Invitational last weekend with their lone victory coming in an upset fashion over then-No. 23 Regis in five sets.
  • The Cougars registered their first win over CUI in 2018 after eight previous meetings as CSUSM recorded a sweep over the Eagles at the D2 West Region Showcase.
  • In their opening weekend, the Eagles tallied three consecutive wins over Western Oregon (3-2), Western New Mexico (3-0) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-2) before falling to host Cal Poly Pomona (1-3).
  • Point Loma and CUI were picked fifth and sixth, respectfully, in the 2021 PacWest Conference Volleyball Preseason Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The Cougars are anxious to get back on the court after their season was canceled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • CSUSM returns five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the CCAA leader in digs  per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 177-117 (.602) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 268-242 (.525) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
