CSUSM to Kick Off CCAA Play at No. 13 Humboldt, Chico

SAN MARCOS, Calif. The Cal State San Marcos men’s soccer team (1-5-0) will begin CCAA play this weekend with trips to No. 13 Humboldt State (6-0) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. and Chico State (1-5) on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM posted its first win of the season this past Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in non-conference play at The Cage.
  • The Coyotes were receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll prior to the game.
  • Tristan Monroe broke CSUSM’s scoreless drought in the 37th minute with the game’s lone goal.
  • In addition to his shutout, CSUSM keeper Jesus Mentado posted a career-high nine saves.
  • The victory was CSUSM’s first over CSUSB since 2008.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • Mentado ranks fourth in the CCAA for total saves with 23 and fifth for saves per game with 3.83.
  • With nine saves against the Coyotes, Mentado’s total tied for the second in a game this season by a CCAA keeper.
  • The Cougars are tied with HSU for the seventh-most corner kicks in the CCAA this season with 26.
  • Of CSUSM’s remaining games, the Cougars have the 46th-toughest strength of schedule nationally and have the second-hardest schedule in the CCAA.

BEGINNING CCAA PLAY AT NO. 13 HUMBOLDT STATE

  • CSUSM is 3-2 in the all-time series against HSU.
  • The Cougars tallied a 3-0 victory over the Lumberjacks in their last meeting in 2019 at The Cage.
  • When playing in Arcata, CSUSM and HSU are knotted at 1-1 with the Cougars’ last victory occurring in 2015.
  • CSUSM has scored at least three goals in each of its three wins over HSU.
  • HSU improved to 6-0 on the season with a 1-0 win against Chico State last Saturday and moved 2-0 at home.
  • The Lumberjacks have yet to allow a goal this season and are one of two teams nationally to do so – the other being Davis & Elkins.
  • Marco Silveira has been HSU’s standout so far with five goals, six assists and 16 points while also leading the team in shots (22) and shots on goal (13).
  • Keeper Adrian Gallardo has 14 saves and five shutouts in five starts with the Lumberjacks.
  • The ‘Jacks are one of seven teams in Division II with a perfect win-loss-tie percentage.
  • HSU is ranked second nationally for assists per game at 3.33.
  • A win over HSU would be CSUSM’s first over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 25 Fresno State in the 2019 season opener in San Marcos, and it would the Cougars’ first-ever road win over a ranked opponent.
  • The Lumberjacks were picked to finish ninth in the 2021 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

ENDING THE WEEKEND AT CHICO STATE

  • Chico began its season with a win over Western Washington at home, but it’s been downhill for the Wildcats ever since with five consecutive losses.
  • CSUSM has yet to beat Chico since joining the CCAA in 2015 as the Cougars are 0-4-1 against the Wildcats.
  • Jacob Chong has scored all three Wildcat goals this season and leads the team in shots (24) and shots on goal (10).
  • Chico keeper Luis Albarran has allowed seven goals this season.
  • The Wildcats have outshot their opponents in five of six matches this season.
  • Chico was picked to finish third in the 2021 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • With the 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform for the first time.
  • The Cougars have 13 returners from the 2019 squad and are fronted by forward Juan Camilo Salazar, who led the Cougars with six goals, 13 points and a season-record 64 shots.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish sixth in the 2021 CCAA Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE PULVERS FILE

  • This season marks the 16th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
  • Pulvers has a 118-98-25 (.541) record as CSUSM's head men's coach.
  • In 24 seasons as a collegiate head men's soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 244-169-39 (.583) career record.
  • He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women's program.
  • From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men's and women's soccer teams.
