Cougars Host Chico State, Stanislaus State this Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team hosts a pair of CCAA matches this weekend at The Sports Center, taking on the Wildcats of Chico State (5-7, 1-3 CCAA) on Friday at 5 p.m. before facing the Stanislaus State Warriors (5-7, 1-3 CCAA) on Saturday at 7 p.m. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars (5-5, 2-2 CCAA) dropped a pair of conference matches last weekend on the road.
  • CSUSM was swept (14-25, 13-25, 15-25) by then-No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday before falling in three sets (23-25, 18-25, 21-25) to No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr tallied 16 digs last weekend to raise her career total to 1,387, moving her within 27 from passing Taylor DeGraaf's CSUSM record of 1,413.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars enter this weekend undefeated in The Sports Center this season. They boast a 2-0 record with wins over Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. 
  • CSUSM is leading the CCAA in digs per set at 16.29.
  • The Cougars are 11th in the nation while leading the conference in assists per set at 13.12.
  • Madison Turner has a conference-leading 11.09 assists per set average, ranking her 12th in the nation.
  • CSUSM ranks second in the conference in kills per set at 14.00 with undefeated Cal Poly Pomona (14.16) leading the CCAA.
  • Kassy Doering is ranked fifth in the CCAA with a .364 hitting percentage.
  • CSUSM's 52 kills against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 10 rank the highest among CCAA teams in a three-set match.
  • Doering's .813 hitting percentage (13k, 0e, 16ta) against Dominican on Sept. 4 is the highest by a CCAA team this season.

FRIDAY AGAINST CHICO STATE

  • The Cougars begin a four-match home series on Friday, welcoming the Chico State Wildcats to The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM holds a 4-3 lead in the all-time series against Chico State and is 2-1 when playing the Wildcats at home.
  • The Cougars have won the last two meetings against the Wildcats, walking away with a sweep in 2019 and recording a five-set victory at Chico in 2018.
  • The Wildcats snapped a six-match losing streak on Saturday at Humboldt by sweeping the Jacks,  25-23, 25-16 and 25-18.
  • Against common opponents, the Cougars recorded a five-set win over San Francisco State while the Wildcats were swept by the Gators. CSUSM swept CSUMB while Chico State suffered a four-set loss.
  • Chico State did not play any matches in 2020 and finished 2019 with a 13-14 overall record and 9-9 record in CCAA action. The Wildcats fell in three sets to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino in the first round of the 2019 CCAA Championship Tournament.
  • Makaela Keeve ranks third in points per set (4.41) in the CCAA while leading the Wildcats in kills (142), blocks (35) and aces (17).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, Chico State was picked to finish tied for eighth place with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

 

SATURDAY SHOWDOWN VS. STAN STATE

  • CSUSM is 3-0 when facing Stanislaus State at home.
  • In the all-time series, the Cougars hold a 5-2 lead over the Warriors.
  • In the last matchup between the two teams, CSUSM tallied a five-set victory (24-26, 25-22, 15-25, 25-18, 15-8) over Stan State in the first round of the 2019 CCAA Championship Tournament.
  • The Warriors enter Friday's match at Cal State East Bay with a 5-7 overall record and 1-3 record in CCAA play.
  • Stan State's lone CCAA victory was at Humboldt State last Friday when the Warriors swept (25-13, 25-14, 26-24) the Jacks.
  • Setter Haley Burdo is tied for second in the CCAA with 21 aces.
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, Stan State was picked to finish sixth.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returned five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time in 2021 with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the 2019 CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 181-119 (.603) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 273-245 (.527) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
