CSUSM Faces CPP, CSUSB on the Road

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  Cal State San Marcos volleyball takes to the road this weekend, facing two AVCA Women's Division II Coaches Top 25 opponents. On Friday, the Cougars will take on No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona before concluding the trip at No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars (5-3, 2-0 CCAA) began CCAA play last weekend with a sweep, taking down CSUMB in three on Thursday before recording a come-from-behind victory over previously unbeaten San Francisco State on Saturday.
  • CSUSM's all-time record against CSUMB improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in The Sports Center with Thursday's 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 win.
  • Down 2-0 against SF State on Saturday, the Cougars rallied back to win a five-set thriller (22-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-13).
  • Kassy Doering's 27 kills, .533 hitting percentage and nine total blocks (four solo) led her to netting CSUSM"s first-ever CCAA Player of the Week honors in program history (see below).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr tallied 33 digs last weekend to raise her career total to 1,371, moving her within 43 from passing Taylor DeGraaf's CSUSM record of 1,413.

FRIDAY AT POMONA

  • The Cougars will look to continue their three-match win streak on Friday against the No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.
  • CSUSM and CPP are knotted at 5-5 in the all-time series as well as even at 3-3 in Kellogg Arena.
  • The Cougars swept the Broncos both times the teams faced each other in 2019.
  • CPP enters Friday's match undefeated at 9-0 with only one of those matches going to five sets, the SoCal Freeway Challenge tournament opener against Point Loma.
  • The other two common opponents CPP has had with CSUSM are Concordia University Irvine (3-1 win) and Fresno Pacific (3-0 win).
  • CPP did not play any matches in 2020 and finished 2019 with an 8-16 overall record and 6-11 record in CCAA action.
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Broncos were picked to finish seventh.

 

SATURDAY AT SAN BERNARDINO

  • CSUSM will conclude its road trip with a stop at No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
  • The Cougars are 1-9 in the all-time series against CSUSB but are winless when playing in Coussoulis Arena.
  • CSUSM's lone victory against the volleyball powerhouse was a thrilling five-set win (25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 15-9) in 2017 in The Sports Center.
  • The Coyotes enter Friday's match against Cal State East Bay with a 7-3 overall record and 2-0 record in CCAA play.
  • CSUSB's three losses this season are to teams now ranked in the AVCA Women's Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll: Simon Fraser (No. 22), Rockhurst (No. 21) and Concordia St. Paul (No. 6).
  • CSUSB did not compete in 2020.
  • In 2019, the Coyotes posted a 33-0 record and became only the third team in the history of NCAA Division II to go undefeated en route to winning the first NCAA Championship in school history.
  • CSUSB was unanimously selected by the conference coaches to repeat as the CCAA champion.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The Cougars are anxious to get back on the court after their season was canceled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • CSUSM returns five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

DOERING NETS CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

  • Senior middle blocker Kassy Doering is the first Cougar in program history to earn the conference's weekly honor.
  • Doering crushed 27 kills in two matches with a hitting percentage of .533. She also had nine total blocks with four solo blocks in the two contests.
  • Against Cal State Monterey Bay, Doering had 10 kills on 17 attempts without an error (.588) while putting up five total blocks (two solo).

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 181-119 (.603) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 273-245 (.527) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
