CSUSM Opens Home Slate on Thursday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  Cal State San Marcos volleyball will open its home and conference schedule beginning on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Cal State Monterey Bay and on Saturday at 1 p.m. against San Francisco State. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars went 2-2 last weekend at the SoCal Freeway Challenge.
  • CSUSM got payback against Fresno Pacific in its tournament opener on Friday, recording a sweep before falling to two-time defending PacWest Champion Azusa Pacific in four sets.
  • After dropping a three-set decision to Point Loma in Saturday's first match, the Cougars rallied back for a come-from-behind four-set victory over host Concordia University Irvine in the tournament finale.
  • Stephanie Adams tallied a team-best 3.43 kills per set over the four matches.
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr tallied 70 digs last weekend to raise her career total to 1,338, moving her within 175 from passing Taylor DeGraaf's CSUSM record of 1,413.

HOME OPENER AGAINST CSUMB

  • The Cougars will play their home opener and conference opener on Thursday, hosting Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • CSUSM holds a slight 3-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Otters.
  • The Cougars are undefeated against CSUMB when playing at The Sports Center with sweeps over the Otters in 2017 and 2019.
  • CSUMB is 6-2 on the season, playing three matches against two common opponents of CSUSM.
  • The Otters began their 2021 campaign with a four-set loss to Fresno State before recording two victories over Dominican.
  • CSUMB did not play any matches in 2020 and finished 2019 with a 6-19 overall record and 2-16 in CCAA action.
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Otters were picked to finish 11th.
  • The Otters are led by new head coach Courtney Materazzi (Taubert), a CSUMB alum (2004-07).

 

SATURDAY AGAINST SF STATE

  • CSUSM will conclude the week by welcoming San Francisco State into The Sports Center.
  • The Cougars are 2-4 in the all-time series against the Gators and are 2-1 when playing in San Marcos.
  • CSUSM has swept SF State in 2016 and 2018 in The Sports Center.
  • In their last meeting, the Cougars dropped a four-set decision to the Gators in San Francisco.
  • SF State opened the season with a 7-0 record, recording sweeps over every opponent except for their season opener against Northwest Nazarene, which went four sets.
  • The Gators did not compete in 2020 but finished their 2019 season with a 16-11 overall record and 9-8 in conference play.
  • In 2019, SF State saw its season end with a five-set loss to then-No. 25 Cal State LA in the opening match of the CCAA Championships.
  • The Gators were picked to finished tied for fourth in the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The Cougars are anxious to get back on the court after their season was canceled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • CSUSM returns five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 179-119 (.601) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 271-245 (.525) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
