CSUSM Set to Face PLNU, CUI

SAN MARCOS, Calif. The Cal State San Marcos men’s soccer team will round out a three-game road trip by visiting Point Loma on Thursday at 1 p.m. before closing out the week at home against Concordia University Irvine on Saturday at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM took a 3-0 loss at Fresno Pacific this past Saturday despite leading the game in multiple categories.
  • CSUSM had the advantage in shots (16-11), shots on goal (7-4) and corner kicks (3-2).
  • The Cougars held possession for 55% of the contest and spent 63% of their time in Sunbird territory.
  • Juan Camilo Salazar led all players with six shots and three shots on goal.
  • Salazar ranks sixth in the CCAA for shots per game at 2.67.

THURSDAY AT POINT LOMA

  • CSUSM will be looking to snap a three-game skid to start the season.
  • The Cougars own a dominating 7-2-1 record against the Sea Lions in the all-time series and are 3-2 when playing in Point Loma.
  • CSUSM has won six of the last seven games against PLNU with the lone loss occurring in 2019.
  • The Sea Lions are winless on the year at 0-2-1. 
  • This past Saturday, PLNU took a 2-1 loss to Cal State San Bernardino at home.
  • Leading the Sea Lions with two goals this season is Corey Lundeen, who has also played a team-high 289 minutes.
  • PLNU keeper Seth Ketterer ranks fourth in the PacWest and 61st overall with 4.33 saves per game.

BACK AT HOME AGAINST CONCORDIA

  • The Cougars will come home on Saturday to face CUI.
  • The all-time series between the Cougars and Eagles is knotted up at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in San Marcos.
  • This will be CUI’s first visit to San Marcos since 2017.
  • CSUSM has won three of the last five games against CUI.
  • The Cougars took a 5-2 loss to the Eagles in Irvine in 2019.
  • Currently 1-1-1, CUI plays Cal State LA on Wednesday night in Irvine before coming to San Marcos on Saturday.
  • The Eagles took their first defeat of the season this past Saturday as they took a 3-2 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
  • With 5.67 saves per game, CUI keeper Andre Flores ranks first in the PacWest and 28th in Division II.
  • Elijah Amadin leads the Eagles with two goals, 11 shots and five shots on goal for the year.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • With the 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform for the first time.
  • The Cougars have 13 returners from the 2019 squad and are fronted by forward Juan Camilo Salazar, who led the Cougars with six goals, 13 points and a season-record 64 shots.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish sixth in the 2021 CCAA Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE PULVERS FILE

  • This season marks the 16th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
  • Pulvers has a 117-96-25 (.544) record as CSUSM's head men's coach.
  • In 24 seasons as a collegiate head men's soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 243-167-39 (.585) career record.
  • He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women's program.
  • From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men's and women's soccer teams.
