CSUSM Places Conference-High 51 on CCAA Spring Academic Honor Roll

CHICO, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos Athletics placed a conference-high 51 student-athletes on the 2021 CCAA Spring Academic Honor Roll.

The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter and spring – for all CCAA sponsored sports. In order to earn CCAA Academic Honor Roll distinction, a student-athlete must be of sophomore athletic standing or higher, and own a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport in that season. The CCAA Spring Academic Honor Roll consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men's and women's golf, baseball, softball and men's and women's track & field.

"I am so impressed and proud of these men and women for all their hard work keeping academics a priority despite the immense challenges they faced," noted CCAA Commissioner Mitch Cox. "They really exemplify the true meaning of student-athlete, and the Division II 'Life in the Balance' approach."

The CSUSM women's track & field team paced the CCAA with 23 selections on the spring list – the most of any spring roster and sport in the conference. Chico State's men's track & field team had the second-most selections with 13.

Of the 51 Cougars to earn the honor, 14 were repeat winners. Griffin Teisher was the only Cougar to earn the honor for a fourth time while Jaqlyn Newhouser, Brittney Scardina, Carly Slack and Walker Welch each took home their third.

In addition to placing the most student-athletes on the spring list, CSUSM also led the CCAA with 39 student-athletes earning a 3.5 or higher.

Only 15 student-athletes in the entire conference boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA. Two of the 15 were CSUSM's Makayla Jones and Adam Lovato.

CSUSM also had the third-highest jump in CCAA Spring Academic Honor Roll selections with a 30.8% increase since last year.

In total, there were 453 spring sport student-athletes across the CCAA's 12 member institutions honored for their efforts in the classroom.
